Üç romanda da ortak olarak işlenen androjenlik teması farklı şekillerde cinsel kimlik rollerini ve bu cinsel kimlik rollerini bireye dayatan ve bireyi bir prototipe dönüştürmeye çalışan ataerkil toplumu sorgulamaktadır. Ayrıca, androjenlik üç romanda da bireyi cinsel kimlik rollerinin sınırlarından kurtaran ve böylece bireyin otonomisini koruyup yaratıcılığım ortaya çıkarmasını sağlayan bir yol olarak görünmektedir. Ancak, ağırlık verilen konu romandan romana farklılık göstermektedir. ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF THE CONCEPT OF ANDROGYNY IN VIRGINIA WOOLF'S ORLANDO, MRS. DALLOWAY, AND TO THE LIGHTHOUSE Zileli, Bilge Nihal M.A., Program in English Literature Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Nursel İçöz July 2000, 90 Pages This thesis is a study of the concept of androgyny in Virginia Woolf s three novels, Orlando, Mrs. Dalloway, and To the Lighthouse. The main argument, which is supported with evidence from the novels and several articles and books, is that the theme of androgyny, the recurring theme in these three novels, questions in different ways gender roles imposed by the patriarchal society, which attempts to reduce the individual to a type; and appears as a means of liberating the individual from the confines of gender roles, so that the individual can preserve his/her autonomy and engage in creative activity. Although all these issues are handled in all these three novels, the extent to which these issues are emphasised varies from novel to novel. For instance, while the criticism of gender roles is in the foreground in Orlando, the emphasis is on the criticism of the patriarchal society in Mrs. Dallowqy. Lastly, in To the Lighthouse what is emphasised is the relationship between androgyny and artistic creativity.
