The remaining of the codices which were transcribed by a council under the headship of Zaid ibn-Thabit in the caliphate of ʿUthmān has been one of the most focused subject matters in the history of the Qur'an. Particularly, the special codex that is supposed to have been read by Caliph ʿUthmān, when he was murdered, has provided a center of interest for both Muslims and other scholars. The ancient manuscripts of the Qur'an which were attributed to the third caliph are today esteemed to be present in different cities. Among them Samarqand, Cairo and Istanbul are the most well-known ones. This dissertation examined whether these Codices belonged to ʿUthmān or not by analyzing them on various subject matters. This analysis surely requires a detailed information on the number of the ʿUthmānic codices, on their survival and on manuscripts existing in present day. In addition to these analyzes, the historical journey of the Qur'an to the present day has been examined as required by the title, and by taking into account the old sources, today's researches and discussions have been included to a large extent. Considering the fact that the Quran is a great piece of research in itself, other details were not included in order not to go beyond the subject, and the idea of only examining its historical course was fixed. While doing all this, the necessary resources, mostly the 2 the one with his blood. 5 analysis and comments of the discussions in the West were evaluated and the need to comment on each copy was found appropriate. On the other hand, the views of the main sources took more place in the study as they presented the first historical journey of Muṣḥafs while the copies were explained under their titles. In this study, how the different copies were reproduced, their belonging to the caliph, if not, the reasons were explained in detail. This issue has a profound importance in itself and especially in terms of the history of the Quran. Because there are many Islamic works whose belonging is discussed in the European thought system. As a matter of fact, this body of divine words, whose accuracy is also discussed with its historical journey and became a religious object, has received its share from this. That is why the desire to present the historical course of this book, which is considered sacred by millions, and to search for copies known to exist today, is the source of my work.
