ABSTRACT Reflections of Gideon Toury's Target-oriented Theory and Hans J. Vermeer's Skopos Theory on Translation Criticism: A Meta-critique by Banu Tellioğlu There is no doubt that translation criticism has been positively affected by the developments in the field of Translation Studies. The new translation theories put forth by contemporary theoreticians make possible the approach to translation criticism within a broader perspective. However, in order to acquire an information flow between these theories and the applied studies, it is necessary to use the theoretical information in the applied studies, to question and test these theories continuously by the help of the data gathered in the applied examples. The aim of this study is to investigate the reflections of Gideon Toury's target-oriented theory and Hans J. Vermeer's skopos theory on translation criticism. Given this context, in the first part of the study, general information is offered about these two theories and some important concepts which are directly related to translation criticism are examined. In addition to this, the methods which are suggested by the target-oriented theory and the skopos theory for translation criticism are determined. In short, the position of translation criticism in these theories is revealed in the first part. In the second part of the study, the critiques of poetry translations are made in order to test the theoretical information gathered in the first part. These critiques are made with IVrespect to the different methods suggested by the above-mentioned theories. in the last part, the methodological similarities/differences between the critiques made in the framework of the target-oriented theory and the skopos theory are analyzed. After this comparative study, some concepts which are of great importance in these theories are taken up agahı, in the discussion on these important concepts, the main propositions of the theories are scrutinized and the sufficiency of the theories with respect to their approaches to translation criticism is questioned.
