ABSTRACT This study has been carried out in order to determine how translation is viewed as a pedagogic device and as a goal in the ELT departments of universities, the reasons why students have difficulty in learning this skill and the means by which the negative approach of students to translation can be changed. This is a study composed of four chapters. In the introductory part of the study, the aim and the scope of the study have been set. The first chapter provides the definition of translation, types of translation, a brief historical development of translation theories, a short scan through well-known teaching methods and approaches in terms of using translation, and finally psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic effects, of language theories in connection with translation. The second chapter gathers the results of a questionnaire aimed at extracting the attitudes of students to translation. The results are analysed, a statistics is worked out and finally the results are evaluated. In the third chapter the necessity of translation is discussed together with its contributions to language learning and teaching. Following, suggestions are made to the teacher in making the activity of translation more enjoyable for the students, in varying the material to be used and in teaching translation through games. The fourth and the final chapter includes a brief summary of the study and a main conclusion drawn from the whole study. The appendices contain the Questionnaire and the boards of the suggested board games.
