Dr. Deniz ZEYREK Aralık 1997, 145 sayfa Bu çalışma, farklı bir okuma öncesi etkinliği olan resimli bağlam ve ön sorgulama tekniklerinin Türk öğrencilerin somut ve soyut akademik okuma parçalarını anlamaları üzerindeki etkilerini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bunun için, öncelikle, aynı İngilizce bilgi düzeyine sahip üç denek grubu oluşturulmuştur. Daha sonra, bir somut ve bir soyut akademik okuma parçası seçilmiştir. Ardından, her bir okuma parçası için bir resimli bağlam ve bir ön sorgulama tekniğinde olmak üzere iki ayrı okuma öncesi etkinliği ve ayrıca her bir okuma parça sına ait kısa cevaplı okuduğunu anlama sınavı hazırlanmıştır. Üç denek grubu her bir parçayı farklı koşullarda okumuş ve hazırlanan sınavları almışlardır. Deneklerin notlarının değerlendirilmesinde SPSS bilgisayar programı kullanılmıştır. Deney gruplarıyla kontrol gruplarınınortalamaları arasında anlamlı istatistiksel farklılıklar bulunamamış, ancak okuma öncesi etkinliklerinin etkisinin okuma parçaları çeşitleriyle ilgili olabileceği bulunmuştur. Böylece, ön sorgulama tekniği soyut okuma parçasının anlaşılmasını etkilerken, resimli bağlam tekniği somut okuma parçasının anlaşılmasını kolaylaştırmıştır.

ABSTRACT EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT PREREADING ACTIVITIES ON THE COMPREHENSION OF DIFFERENT TEXT TYPES BY TURKISH EFL LEARNERS ÇA?LAN, Hilal M. A., in English Language Teaching Supervisor : Assoc. Prof. Dr. Deniz ZEYREK December 1997, 145 pages This study aims to examine the effects of different prereading activities, namely pictorial context and prequestioning on the comprehension of different types of academic reading texts, namely concrete texts and abstract texts by Turkish EFL Learners. For this, three groups of subjects who were at the same level of proficiency were formed, first. Next, one concrete and one abstract academic reading text were selected. Then, one pictorial context prereading activity and one prequestioning prereading activity were prepared for each reading text. Also, one short answer test was constructed based on each reading text. The three groups of subjects read each passage under different conditions, and took the short answer tests. xixThe SPSS program was used to analyze the scores of the subjects. No statistically significant differences could be found among the means. of experimental groups and the control group. However, it was found that the effect of prereading activities may be related to the text types. Thus, prequestioning slightly affected the comprehension of the abstract text while pictorial context slightly improved the comprehension of the concrete text.
