In this study, competition theories are first analyzed by sorting them as static and dynamic competition theories and then they are compared to each other. The Neoclassical models of perfect and imperfect competition considered as static competition theories, while the Classical and Marxian competition theories and Schumpeter's“creative destruction”process are considered as dynamic competition theories. Neoclassical competition theory asserts that competition will equalize profit rates of different industries. On the other hand, the dynamic competition theories expose competition as a continuum of dynamic processes that is infinitely competitive. Therefore, in the long run, competition leads either to an equilibrium by equalizing rates of profit, or to a disequilibrium by targeting capital accumulation. The volatility and evolution of profit rates in a capitalistic economy would affect production and investment decisions as well as fluctuations in the economy. The purpose of this study is to examine whether competition can equalize profit rates of different industries. In other words, the study tries to test the predictions of static and dynamic competition theories for the Turkish manufacturing industries for the period of 2003-2015. Data obtained from the Annual Industry and Service Statistics database of the Turkish Statistical Institute. A dynamic panel data analysis is conducted in order to test for the persistence of profit rate differentials among NACE Rev.2 (2 digit) classification of Turkish manufacturing industries. The empirical analysis is carried out for both average and incremental rates of profit and we employ a dynamic panel data analysis namely Augmented Mean Group (AMG) estimator in order to search for evidence concerning the whole manufacturing and sub sector of the manufacturing industry. The results show that the short term profit persistence is not very strong in Turkish manufacturing industry and its' sub-sectors. In this context, the dynamic competition theories seems to be more applicable in explaining the evolution profit rates and profit rate differentials in the Turkish manufacturing industry for the period of 2003-2015.
