SUMMARY Instead of just delivering information, education teaches the ways to be able to reach it in the 20th century. The traditional idea of education had a qualitative change and led to development of a new approach. The new approach considers education an active learning experience rather than a passive one. Therefore, museums have taken its place as invaluable institutions in the new understanding of education. Museums have been expanding their collection by collecting outstanding or ancient products. Their main duties have been maintaining, documenting, exhibiting and protecting these goods. Nowadays, by including education of society and raising the society's cultural level in their objectives, museums have been taken into account as common educational institutions. To be able to reach these educational goals, museums use various methods and techniques. Museums have some important functions such as displaying the past and helping to form right historical consciences. One of the main objectives of education in museums is developing the emotions center and the mental images in the brain. Museums give formal and informal education. Visiting the museums, examining the collections, even taking a tour in the galleries is a learning process. In this process, learning is acquired without making a noteworthy effort. In the western countries, museums make programs to offer direct or indirect educational services to the society. These programs include various educational activities that can take different time frames for children, nyoungsters, adults, teachers, student groups, out-of-group visitors and for families. As a conclusion, museums should help education to be useful to the society, while education should use museums to be effective. in
