IV ÖZ BİLKENT ÜNİVERSİTESİNDE VERİLEN İNGİLİZCE Ö?RETMENLERİ İÇİN HİZMET İÇİ E?İTİM PROGRAMININ DE?ERLENDİRİLMESİ AYŞEGÜL DALO?LU Doktora, Eğitim Bilimleri Danışman: Prof. Meral AKSU Ocak 1996 Bu tez Bilkent Üniversitesi İngiliz Dili Meslek Yüksek Okulunda İngilizce öğretmenlerine verilen hizmet içi eğitim programının (COTE) değerlendirilmesidir. Bu çalışmanın esas amacı şu soruya cevap vermektir: COTE programının hangi boyuttan kuwetlendirilmeli, kaldırılmalı, eklenmeli, veya olduğu gibi kalmalıdır? Bu soruya cevap verebilmek için 1994-1995 akademik yılında COTE programına katılanlardan, 1994-1995 akademik yılında COTE programı öğretmenlerinden, daha evvelki beş sene içinde bu programdan mezun olanlardan ve COTE programına katılanların öğrencilerinden veriler toplanmıştır. Bu çalışmada nitelikli ve nicelikli veriler toplanmıştır. Nitelikli veriler akademik senenin değişik zamanlarında yukarıda bahsi geçen guruplara verilen anketler yoluyla toplanmıştır. Nicelikli veriler ise mülakatlar ve gözlemler yoluyla elde edilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonuçlan COTE programının katılanların gereksinimlerine uygun ve etkili bir kurs olduğunu göstermiştir. Yapılacak bazı eklemeler ve kuvvetlendirmelerle progamı daha etkili kılmak mümkündür.

III ABSTRACT A CASE STUDY ON EVALUATING“THE CERTIFICATE FOR OVERSEAS TEACHERS OF ENGLISH”CURRICULUM AT BILKENT UNIVERSITY Daloğlu, Ayşegül Ph.D., Department of Educational Sciences Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Meral Aksu January 1996, 248 pages This dissertation evaluates the curriculum of the COTE course, an in- service teacher education program offered at Bilkent University School of English Language. The study aims to answer the following main question: What aspects of the COTE course need to be maintained, strengthened, deleted, or added to? In answering this question, data was collected from the COTE participants enrolled in the course in the 1994-1995 academic year, the tutors who delivered the course in the 1994-1995 academic year, the graduates who completed the course in the previous five years it has been offered, and students in the classes of COTE participants. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected in the study. The quantitative data consisted of questionnaires administered at different times of the academic year to the course participants, course tutors, and graduates. The qualitative data was collected through interviews and observations conducted with course participants. The purpose of utilizing qualitative data was to make the quantitative data richer and more in depth. The results of the data show that the COTE course was an effective program that met the needs of the participants to a large extent as the participants reported feeling more competent in teaching related issues after they completed the course. However, some additions and deletions can be made to the program to make it better adjusted to the needs of the participants and to the institutional environment. In addition to this, some components of the course can be strengthened.
