Özet
ÖZET Bu doktora tezi, Türkiye'de özellikle Yabancı Dil Öğretmenliği Sertifikası programlarında 'Ders Kitaplarının Seçilmesi ve Değerlendirilmesi' içerikli dersin neden gerekli olduğunu araştırmayı amaçlamıştır. Buna paralel olarak, piyasada bulunan yabancı dil ders kitaplarının öğrencilerin gereksinimlerim ne düzeyde karşılayabildiğin^ değerlendirilmesi için bir model geliştirilmesi de bu çalışmanın amacı kapsamındadır. Bu çalışma, bir durum çalışması olarak tasarlanmış olup, yabancı dil öğretmeni adaylarının 'Ders Kitaplarının Seçilmesi ve Değerlendirilmesi' konusunda eğitilmelerini öngörmektedir. Dahası, Yabancı Dil Öğretmenliği Sertifikası programlarında 'Ders Kitaplarının Seçilmesi ve Değerlendirilmesi' adı altında bir dersin dahil edilmesi gerektiğini savunmaktadır. Bu çalışma lisans programlarına yönelik yapılmış bir durum çalışmasıdır, hizmet içi eğilimi programlan bu çalışmanın kapsamına alınmamıştır. Bu çalışmada irdelenen konular şu şekilde özetlenebilir: Yabancı dil dersi programlarında program, izlence, öğretmenler, 1. öğrenciler ve testler gibi değişkenler ile ders kitabı arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemek. 2. Ders kitaplarının seçilmesi ve değerlendirilmesi için gerekli kriterlerin neler olduğunu ve bunların nasıl belirleneceğini saptamak. 3. Bir gurup lisans öğrencisini bu konuda eğitmek. Betimlemeli durum çalışması olarak tasarlanan bu araştırmada, bazı İngilizce ders kitapları kullanımlarından önce İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümünde okuyan İngilizce öğretmenliği aday adayı bir gurup lisans öğrencisine incelettirilmiştir. Veriler, betimleme yöntemi ile anket çalışması yapılarak ve incelemeye alınan bazı ders kitapları hakkında deneklere rapor yazdırarak toplanmıştır. Veriler, yüzde hesabı ve Ki kare hesabı teknikleri uygulanarak analiz edilmiştir. Bir durum çalışması olduğu için bu tezden elde edilen sonuçlar genellenemez, ancak araştırmanın yapıldığı bağlam içerisinde değerlendirilmelidirler.

ABSTRACT This research addresses itself to the question as to why it is essential to integrate Materials Evaluation module in the Language Teacher Training [Certificate] programmes in Turkey. Simultaneously, a methodology is proposed for determining how satisfactorily available materials, ie. commercially available textbooks, provide for the needs of the learners in any ELT situations. This research is designed as a case study to assess the necessity of integrating a ME module into TT certificate programmes. It is argued that it is essential to train student-teachers on how to evaluate ELT Materials. It is further argued that in order to realise this, it is necessary to integrate textbook evaluation modules in Language Teacher Training [Certificate] programmes. It should be pointed out that this research does not attempt to extend the study to in-service TT courses, the focus is on pre-service TT courses. The main areas of interest are: 1. The interactions between the materials and the other variables in a language teaching process, (i.e. curriculum, syllabus, teachers, learners and testing). 2. The constructional categorisation of materials evaluation criteria checklist. 3. Training of a group of student-teachers on how to evaluate materials. It is attempted to get a group of student-teachers studying at a Department of English Language and Literature to evaluate the textbooks prior to their use in a language classroom. This study is designed as a descriptive case study. The data were obtained by means of using questionnaires, and by means of getting the participant student-teachers to write reports on the textbooks under scrutiny. These data were analysed by using the percentage calculations and the Chi square test. Being a case study, this research has presented data which does not completely fulfil the normal research criteria for generalisability and external validity. Thus, it is possible to speculate about the research findings only with regards to the scope limited to the present study. The overall conclusion of the study is as follows: Materials Evaluation should become part of pre-service teacher-training, [as well as being a part of in-service teacher-training] because training student-teachers on ME will not only make them aware of the criteria upon which they could judge the textbooks, but also serve as an exercise in understanding the nature of LL and LT better. Thus, they are less likely to be influenced by the advertisements on textbooks.
