ABSTRACT Masters Thesis DETERMINATION OF FRUIT CRACKING CHARACTERISTICS OF SOME SWEET CHERRY (Pranas avium L) CULTIVARS AND INFLUENCE OF GROWTH REGULATORS ON CRACKING irfati TOKER Ankara University Graduate School of Applied Sciences Department of Horticulture Supervisor :Prof.Dr. Yücel GÜLSEN 1995, Page:44 Jury :Prof.Dr.Yücel GÜLSEN Prof.Dr. Rahmi ÖZÇA?IRAN Assoc.Prof.Dr..Lami KAYNAK In this research, fruit cracking properties of certain sweet cherry varieties were determined and effect of growth regulators on cracking were studied. In Bigarreau Jaboulay, Merton Premier, Bigarreau Gaucher, Berryessa, Larian, Starking Hardy Giant, Hedelfinger, Corum, Merton Bigarreau, Bigarreau Napoleon, Lambert and Jubilee foreign cultivars and Salihli and Malatya Dalbastı native cultivars, cracking indexes were determined and fruit properties that can affect cracking were studied. Cracking indexes of these cultivars for two subsequent years were found to be different and crackings mostly occured in the apex and cavity. No correlation was found between cracking and fruit properties such as, soluble solids, pH, fruit weight, fruit flesh firmness and water absorbtion. In Bigarreau Napoleon, Lambert and Malatya Dalbastı cultivars 2 doses of NAA and GA3 were applied in order to prevent fruit cracking at two different times. The most effective dose for NAA was lppm and GA3 applications were found to be ineffective in preventing fruit crackings.
