SUMMARY This paper is a study of the effects of military interventions on the constitutions of Turkey, in the light of theoretical and comparative analysis regarding the transition from military regimes to democracy. The main argument of the study is that in each case, after the establishment of democratic order, military leaders gain new privileges and reinforce their sphere of influence as a compensation for returning the power to civil authorities. In fact, after the three interventions which disturbed the normal course of Turkey's politics, the military regimes implemented new constitutional articles to broaden their influence in the state mechanism, before returning the power to civilians. In the first phase of the study, a brief summary of the political events after the transition to multi-party system is given, followed by the new privileges gained by the military authorities after the 1961 constitution which is a result of the May 27 1960 coup d'eta. The second chapter starts with a brief look at the political events of the new constitutional order, followed by an outlook on the new gains of the military powers, which is a result of the constitutional amendments imposed by the semi-military regime, a consequence of the 12 March 1971 memorandum of the Turkish Armed Forces. Finally, the third chapter provides a summary of the political events of the 70's that lead to 12 September 1980 intervention, followed by a discussion of the new privileges and spheres of influence gained by military authorities in the 1982 Constitution, which was modelled by the influence of the military regime.
