Özet (Çeviri)
ii ABSTRACT In this study, we tried to deal with at least two types of violence: physical and psychological in Lear and King Lear, the former by Edward Bond and the latter by Shakespeare. Since one type of violence brings about another, these two cannot be separated from each other. Edward Bond's main concern is both violence and the people who have to live and bear such an atmosphere. In his play Lear, Bond especially deals with a society ruled by a king who first of all wants to stop his enemies entering his kingdom for which he spent much of his life. But that will actually be a long process and till the king himself reaches the full consciousness, many will be the victims of that behaviour and both violence and the aggressive actions will haunt society. Bond traces the origin of violence back to the early stages of mankind. Despite the fact that some of Bond's plays show similarities with those of Shakespeare's, the ground on which the plays stand is valid for today and today's problems. It is not so difficult to see the obvious reflections of physical and natural violence in Shakespeare's King Lear. The world in Bond's plays, we may add, is far from being something full of pessimisticİÜ elements. Although the society seems to accept using violence, we still meet those having good and non violent opinions in Bond's plays as observed in Lear himself. For Bond, in a sense, the survival of society is closely related with a full consciousness of the individuals. As for some other contemporary playwrights the world wars and the destructions brought with these wars play a role in his plays. But the future, Bond believes will be quite different and peaceful.
