SUMMARY This study has been realized to investigate the perception of individuals of their family of origin and to identify whether there is a relationship between their perception of their current families and perception of their family of origin. To evaluate the perceived levels of health in family of origin, the Family-of- Origin Scale (FOS), and to evaluate the perceived levels of health current family, Family Scale have been adopted and standardized. The study has covered 1042 individuals of which 521 are mothers and 521 are fathers, having children attending at elementary school. The subjects are comprised of mothers and fathers of children attending at Fatoş Abla Koleji, Yükseliş Koleji, T.E.D. Ankara Koleji, Kıymet Necip Tesal İlköğretim Okulu, Çukurambar Arjantin İlkokulu which are believed to represent the three social economic status (SES) (Lover-Medium-Upper) with in the territory of Ankara. The SES have been defined by the education levels of the fathers. The Family -of- Origin Scale and Family Scale have been used in the study, together with the Family Information Form which was utilized to gather information for the other fields which are important for family function. Following the factorial analysis of Family -of- Origin Scale, 4 factors have been identified:“Responsibility and Expression of Feelings”,“Openness to others and Emphaty”,“Respect to others”and“Emotional Climate and Conflict Resolution”. The test-retest reliability of the scale has been found as.90 and Cronbach alpha coefficient has been found as.94. At the end of the factorial analysis of Family Scale, 2 factors have been identified as:“Sensitivity to others, Expression of Feelings and ”Acceptance of Loss and Separation“ and Emotional Climate and Conflict Resolution”. The test-retest reliability of the scale has been found as.80 and Cronbach alpha coefficient has been found as.92. It has been observed that subjects who had low points from FOS, also and had low points from Family Scale, in other words, individuals who perceive their family - of- origin as unhealthy, also perceive their current family unhealthy. Also, observations have been made that the points received from Family Scale were low for the lower and midle-low SES: The perceived level of health in the current family is directly related to education, profession, communication between parents, expectations from marriage and husband or wife, and number of people in the family. At the end of the study the scales have been found to form a harmonious whole in identifying the perceived level of health in family of origin and current family, and in pointing out the intergenerational effects, thus proving to be effective and useful regarding the mentioned points. 60
