Film constitutes a holistic medium of representation that supports visual narration through auditory components, with film music in particular emerging as a significant layer that guides the viewer's perception. Playing an active role in establishing visual continuity and shaping the emotional tone of scenes, film music strengthens narrative impact by creating a connection between image and meaning. This relationship becomes more explicit through techniques such as synchronization, mickey-mousing, leitmotif, and counterpoint, in which musical rhythm and harmony interact with visual movement and editing to enhance audiovisual coherence. In this sense, film music can be regarded not merely as an accompanying element, but as a functional design component that contributes to emotional engagement and narrative construction. Design education is predominantly conducted through visual representations; however, auditory and temporal components such as sound, rhythm, movement, and shadow—although decisive in the formation of spatial perception—are often insufficiently integrated into educational processes. From this perspective, the present study aims to investigate the potential of auditory components within the design process, to increase students' sensory awareness, and to make the multilayered perception of space more explicit. In other words, the study proposes an experiential learning framework for first-year basic design studios in which temporal design elements such as sound, shadow, and movement are addressed with an importance equivalent to that of visual components such as form, color, and texture. Within this framework, the thesis integrates conceptual approaches derived from disciplines such as music, film, and theatre into design education, examining the operational principles of film music that combine auditory and visual elements, and aiming to develop an innovative studio approach based on the unity of music and movement. Furthermore, the study relates the visualization of music, film production techniques, and methods of shadow formation to the stage design principles of Bauhaus artist Oskar Schlemmer, positioning the synchronization between visual movement and auditory rhythm—one of the fundamental principles of film music—as an educational tool. Accordingly, the interaction between the human body, space, light, and shadow is conceptualized as a“musical”structure, with the aim of introducing an experiential approach to basic design education through the coexistence of form and rhythm. This study seeks to render visible the temporal and auditory components—such as sound, music, shadow, rhythm, and movement—that often remain secondary to visual representations in design education, thereby enhancing students' conceptual thinking skills and increasing their awareness of spatial atmosphere production. By integrating methods from different disciplines into the studio environment, the proposed process enables students to evaluate space not merely as a formal construct, but as a multilayered phenomenon shaped by experience and perception. In this context, students are encouraged to experience space at a 1:1 scale through the use of shadow, to become familiar with recording and editing processes through film production techniques, and to examine the relationship between spatial livability, atmosphere, and bodily movement within a temporal framework through animations produced using artificial intelligence and/or other digital tools. Within the scope of the research, a literature review was conducted on film music, approaches to basic design education, and the work of Oskar Schlemmer and Bauhaus theatre. In addition, the visualization of music, film production processes, the spatialization of shadow, installation practices, the exhibition of music, and its cinematic representation constituted the main areas of investigation. In the application phase, a 14+14-week basic design studio syllabus was developed and implemented based on findings obtained from experimental modules conducted within interior architecture design, basic design, and product design courses. The process was evaluated through student surveys, formal and conceptual analyses of final products, and AI-supported measurement and analysis methods; the strengths of the model as well as aspects requiring further development were discussed. In light of the findings, an original“sine-musical”studio model is proposed for basic design studios in interior architecture, and its application potential and adaptability to different studio contexts are evaluated.
