Statistically, the most accidents during flight occur aircraft landing. Therefore, auxiliary control structures, or autopilots, are needed to assist pilots and ensure a safe landing. Within the scope of this thesis, three different control structures that control the aircraft's longitudinal and lateral dynamics during the glide and flare phases of the landing were designed. Aircraft have control surfaces attached to the wings and tail surfaces. These control surfaces allow the pilot to control the aircraft around three axes of rotation, providing pitch, roll, and yaw motions. These control surfaces are divided into two groups: primary and secondary. Within the scope of this thesis, the GTM aircraft model's movement around three axes was achieved by controlling three primary control surfaces which are elevator, aileron, rudder and also the throttle. Flight dynamics parameters include certain angles. Defining these angles is very important for controlling the aircraft and easily understanding its current state. The three basic Euler angles are pitch, roll, and yaw, respectively. The angle that defines the amount of rotation about the longitudinal axis is called the roll angle. The amount of rotation about the lateral axis is called the pitch angle. The amount of rotation about the vertical axis is defined as the yaw angle. There are other angles which are very important for the flight dynamics like angle of attack and flight path angle. The angle between the chord of an aircraft's wing and the relative wind is called as angle of attack. The flight path angle represents the angle between the direction the aircraft is moving and the horizon. It is also equivalent to the angle of climb or descent. Stability is a property of equilibrium. When an aircraft is in a steady flight, the total force and moment acting on the aircraft's center of gravity must be zero. An aircraft that meets this condition is said to be in equilibrium. Aircraft stability is generally divided into two categories: static and dynamic stability. The GTM aircraft model is a scaled fixed-wing, twin-engine commercial aircraft model created by NASA for risk-free flight testing. A 6-degree-of-freedom GTM model, built in MATLAB, was used. For this purpose, PID, artificial neural network, and self-tuning PID by neural networks controllers were designed to control this aircraft model. To achieve this, the GTM model was linearized under specified trim conditions. The linearized model has 9 inputs and 12 states. Since the system outputs are chosen to be the same as the states, the system has 12 outputs. The obtained linear model was compared with the nonlinear model. It was observed that linear and nonlinear systems performed quite similarly when given the same signal as an input signal to both. The longitudinal and lateral dynamics of the linearized aircraft model were obtained. The longitudinal and lateral modes that define the flight characteristics were discussed. These modes are defined by the location of the aircraft's poles in the complex plane and represent specific aircraft motions. According to the US“Military Specification for the Flying Qualities of Piloted Airplanes”(MIL-F-8785C Standard), the requirements for aircraft modes are classified according to airplane classes, flight phases, and flight qualities levels. These standards were examined within the scope of the thesis. These standards give the minimum and maximum values that the damping and natural frequency values of the longitudinal and lateral modes of an aircraft can take under different conditions. The modes of the GTM aircraft model were then determined, and the behavior of these modes was examined. Automatic flight control systems include stability augmentation systems (SAS), control augmentation systems (CAS), and autopilots. SAS provides artificial stability to an aircraft with undesirable flight characteristics, while CAS are control augmentation systems, typically used in fighter aircraft when the pilot needs to maneuver the aircraft at its performance limits. Autopilots, on the other hand, were developed for pilot assistance and are designed to suppress steady-state errors and disturbances. These three flight control systems are examined in detail under their subheadings within the thesis. Then, landing control systems were discussed more specifically. During the literature review, some studies on landing control and the use of neural networks in landing control were examined. The aircraft's landing phases were investigated, and the glide and flare phases were selected to control. These are the last two landing phases of the aircraft before touchdown. The control methods used are then discussed in detail. PID controllers are used in many fields, including aviation, due to their simplicity and robustness. PID controllers include proportional (P), integral (I), and derivative (D) control. By combining these three different controls within a single controller, they overcome the disadvantages of individual controls. A PI controller was used in this thesis. Artificial neural networks are designed inspired by the human brain. Like the brain, they contain processing units called neurons arranged in layers. Neurons are multi-input, single-output processing units. Information exchange between neurons within layers occurs through structures called weights, which are equivalent to synapses in real brain structures. An artificial neural network consists of at least two layers: input and output layers. Depending on the complexity of the problem being addressed, additional layers called hidden layers can be added between these two layers. The signals that given to the input layer of a neural network are transferred through the layers of the network using weights. This transfer occurs as follows: signals are multiplied by the weights, and the products sent to each neuron are summed within the neuron. This is the linear part of the neuron. The neuron contains an activation function. This function is generally nonlinear. Only the activation functions for neurons in the output layer can be chosen to be linear. This nonlinearity allows artificial neural networks to solve more complex problems. The weighted sum passes through the activation function to form the neuron's output signal, which is then transferred through the network via weights attached to the next layer. The neural networks designed within this thesis were trained with a backpropagation algorithm. In the gradient descent-based backpropagation algorithm, the error which is calculated in the output layer is backpropagated throughout the network to calculate new weight values that will minimize the error. In the second model, the function of the neural network is to generate an output by receiving reference and measurement signals from the system simultaneously with the PI controller. This output is added to the u signal generated by the PI controller to create a new control signal. The aim is to increase the effectiveness of the control signal sent to the system in this way. The designed neural network has a single hidden layer which contains 12 neurons with an activation function of tanh. Three input signals are received in the input layer, and the output layer containes an output neuron with a linear activation function. The third control method investigated in this study is the self-tuning PI control by artificial neural networks. In this approach, the neural network operates within the forward-propagation phase to compute the two gain parameters of the PI controller—namely the proportional gain and the integral gain by using the most recently updated network weights. For this purpose, one neural network were placed in each of the two longitudinal control blocks. These two neural networks have two outputs; the proportional gain and the integral gain of the PI controllers. These adaptive gains are then supplied to the PI controller at each sampling time to generate the corresponding control command. Once this control signal is applied to the aircraft model, the actual system response is obtained and compared with the desired reference signal to compute the instantaneous tracking error. This error is subsequently used in the backpropagation algorithm, which employs a gradient-descent-based optimization mechanism to update the neural network weights. Through this iterative process, the neural network continuously adjusts the PI gains in real time. The structure of the neural networks which were used in the third model has 4 different layers. First layer is the input layer, and four signals are received as input signals to the neural network. Second and third layers are the hidden layers. First hidden layer has four neurons and other hidden layer has three neurons. All the hidden neurons have tanh function as the activation function. The last layer is output layer, and for a control surface, one neural network has two outputs signal as proportional gain, and integral gain. Different control architectures were implemented in the MATLAB/Simulink environment to evaluate the three different controllers. A landing profile was constructed based on the characteristics of the glide and flare phases, and the overall model was divided into four main subsystems: two responsible for the longitudinal dynamics and another two for the lateral–directional dynamics of the aircraft. The longitudinal subsystem generates the elevator control signal using altitude and pitch-angle feedback, and the throttle control signal using speed feedback. The lateral–directional subsystem consists of two independent controllers: an aileron controller using the roll-angle deviation and a rudder controller using the sideslip-angle deviation. These structured sub-blocks allow each control surface to regulate the corresponding aircraft motion axis effectively during the landing maneuver. Five different PI controllers were designed, considering the established design criteria, and aircraft simulations were performed. In the remainder of the study, the control of longitudinal motion was focused on. Secondly, the designed longitudinal control blocks were modified for neural networks; neural networks were added to improve the PI controller results. For each longitudinal control surface—elevator, throttle—a dedicated single-hidden-layer feedforward NN is implemented inside a MATLAB/Simulink environment. Each network receives three normalized inputs that reflect both reference commands and aircraft dynamic feedback and produces a control signal that is added to the PI output. The hidden layer employs a tanh activation function, while the output neuron is linear. An online learning mechanism is applied at every simulation step to minimize filtered error and effectively reduce overshoot. Finally, the longitudinal control structure was rebuilt, and a neural-network-based self-tuning mechanism that adapts the PI controller gains was designed. For each control surface, a feed-forward neural network process the error, error rate, measurement rate, and reference rate to generate gain adjustments around predefined baseline PI values within a safe scaling range. The PI controller is implemented with an anti-windup structure, and the saturation error is used both to correct the integral term and as a feedback signal for online learning of the neural networks. This approach transforms the fixed-gain PI controller into an adaptive, data-driven structure. At the end of the study, the performances of the three control structures were compared according to the results of longitudinal simulations.
