Contemporary art – the art of today – encapsulates and incorporates a wide variety of expressive means, which, by drawing upon the capabilities afforded by technology, challenge the existing boundaries of traditional modes of creation. Especially empowered by the technological developments of the last five decades, contemporary practices have expanded the expressive potential of artists by offering new avenues, resulting in radical transformations within artistic perspectives. Within this context, the art of video performance – through its own hybrid nature – provides both a performative encounter for the audience and the means to render this encounter into a layered narrative through the medium of video technology. This thesis seeks to examine video performance art through the concepts of“repetition”and“dialogue with the self,”both of which emerge as central within the artistic practices undertaken throughout the process. The relationship the artist constructs with their own body, memory, and temporality is reconstituted across multiple layers through the tools afforded by video technology – such as repetition, recording, and montage. Accordingly, the study investigates the historical development of video art in tandem with its intersections with performance art, focusing on the visual and conceptual dialogues forged between the subject and the“self”within this hybrid field. Following this, video performance art is analyzed in relation to the concept of repetition. The final section of the thesis concentrates on one of the most distinctive aspects of video performance: the dialogue the subject establishes with the self. Through actions enacted before the camera, the artist confronts their own existence both physically and emotionally. This confrontation constitutes not only a personal disclosure but also an internal dialogue opened to the audience. The use of repetition, temporal shifts, and visual interruptions allows this dialogue to acquire a multilayered structure. Within this process, the audience becomes not merely a witness but a participant, situated within the recurring body and voice. Thus, video performance art transforms into a field that interrogates selfhood, identity, and memory through a triangular relationship forged among the subject, the camera, and the viewer. By turning the camera upon themselves, the artist generates two images: the recorded image and its projection in repetition. The convergence of the artist's physical presence and their multiplied image on the screen enables the construction of a dialogue with the self. In this sense, the internal dialogues emerging within the sphere of video performance are approached, throughout this study, as a form of encounter with the self. In the concluding section devoted to practice, repetition – as one of the crucial elements of video performance – is considered the primary force shaping the artist's dialogue with the self. In these practices, dialogue engenders a fragmentation of self, allowing the camera-facing artist to perceive not only their own inner world but also that of the other.
