Özet

Çalışmamızda Orta Bizans döneminde Nikomedia ve çevresinin siyasi, idari, askeri, coğrafi, dini, ticari ve toplumsal önemini anlatmaya çalıştık. Orta Bizans dönemi Nikomedia ve çevresinin idari ve coğrafi yapısını Optimaton Theması çerçevesinde değerlendirdik. Nikomedia ve çevresinin coğrafi yapısını değerlendirirken bir güzergâh olarak öneminden de bahsetmeyi ihmal etmedik. Orta Bizans döneminde Nikomedia ve çevresinin ifade edilen konulardaki önemini anlatmaya çalışırken tarihsel süreç içerisinde özellikle dönem kaynaklarının bizlere sunmuş olduğu Nikomedia ve çevresi hakkındaki bilgileri aktarmayı ve bu bilgileri yorumlar ve tahliller ile açıklamayı amaçladık. Ayrıca Nikomedia ve çevresinde meydana gelen olayların bölgenin gelişimine olumlu veya olumsuz tesirlerini ortaya koymayı arzuladık. Bunların haricinde Nikomedia ve çevresinin Bizans İmparatorluğu'nun bu dönem aralığında yaşamış olduğu siyasi, askeri, ekonomik ve toplumsal olaylardan ne denli etkilendiğini ifade etmek ve Orta Bizans döneminde Nikomedia ve çevresinin tarihsel sürecini ele almak istedik. Çalışmamızın coğrafi kapsamını belirlerken büyük ölçüde Optimaton Theması arazisini referans aldık. Bu bağlamda çalışmamızda konu edindiğimiz coğrafyanın sınırlarını Nikomedia'yı merkez olarak kabul edip en doğuda Malagina, en batıda Khalkedon ve Khyrsopolis, en kuzeyde Kefken ve en güneyde dahil etmemek suretiyle İznik hududu olarak belirledik.

In our study, we aimed to present the political, administrative, military, geographical, religious, commercial, and social significance of Nicomedia and its surroundings during the Middle Byzantine period. We evaluated the administrative and geographical structure of Nicomedia and its environs within the framework of the Optimaton Theme. While examining the geographical features of Nicomedia and the surrounding region, we also emphasized its importance as a route. In explaining the significance of Nicomedia and its surroundings in the aforementioned aspects during the Middle Byzantine period, we sought to convey the information provided by the sources of the time and to clarify these through interpretation and analysis. Furthermore, we intended to demonstrate the positive or negative impact of the events that occurred in Nicomedia and its surroundings on the development of the region. Beyond these, we aimed to highlight how Nicomedia and its environs were affected by the political, military, economic, and social events experienced by the Byzantine Empire within this period, and to examine the historical trajectory of Nicomedia during the Middle Byzantine era. When determining the geographical scope of our study, we largely referred to the territory of the Optimaton Theme. Accordingly, we defined the boundaries of the region under discussion by taking Nicomedia as the center: with Malagina in the east, Chalcedon and Chrysopolis in the west, Kefken in the north, and the border of Nicaea in the south—excluding Nicaea itself.
