Gimbal systems are mechanical structures designed to provide two or three degrees of rotational freedom according to their intended use, enabling both stabilization and mobility for the payloads they carry, such as weapons and electro-optical systems. These systems are engineered to maintain the orientation of their payloads against disturbances caused by the dynamics of the platform they are integrated into, ensuring stabilization and precise motion control. Control algorithms are employed to achieve the required performance. For each axis of a gimbal system to be controlled, one electric motor, one encoder, and one gyroscope are used. Electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy to provide the torque required for the orientation of the gimbal mechanism. Angular position data obtained from encoder sensors enable precise determination of the system's position, while angular velocity data from gyroscope sensors are used as feedback in motion control and stabilization algorithms. Thanks to Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control, the voltage applied to the motor is regulated by using fixed-amplitude pulse signals at specific intervals. The voltage signal used to control motor torque is adjusted by a closed-loop current controller. In modern motor drivers, the current and PWM controllers function as high-bandwidth closed-loop control systems, which significantly suppress the effect of the motor's electrical transfer function. As a result, the electrical part of the gimbal system is considered to operate with full accuracy without the need for explicit electrical modeling. The dynamic model of the gimbal system was structured as a single-input single-output (SISO) system, with electrical current as the input and angular velocity from a gyroscope as the output. The transfer function of the system consists of the torque constant, inertia, and friction parameters, which were identified through system identification methods. Sweep, PRBS (Pseudorandom Binary Sequence), and Frequency Sweep current signals of varying amplitudes were applied to the yaw and pitch axes of the real gimbal system. Using MATLAB's System Identification Toolbox, transfer function parameters were extracted for each test condition based on the collected current inputs and gyroscopic outputs. The models were evaluated by calculating RMS accuracy and VAF scores, and the best-performing parameter sets were accepted as the linear dynamic models of the gimbal system. To increase model fidelity and more accurately represent the behavior of the real system, nonlinear effects-dependent on angular position, velocity, and motion direction-were also modeled and integrated into the system. The LuGre friction model was employed to represent both pre-sliding and sliding friction behavior. Additionally, the influence of mass imbalance due to the system's mass distribution, which affects its rotational dynamics, was analyzed in two parts: static and dynamic. While static imbalance can be mitigated during mechanical design, dynamic imbalance-arising from non-zero off-diagonal elements in the inertia matrix-was modeled through experimental data. Friction and imbalance models were mathematically formulated based on test results and incorporated into the overall dynamic model. Furthermore, a gyroscope model was developed to enhance the accuracy of the angular velocity output. By combining the inertia values from the linear model with these nonlinear components, a complete nonlinear dynamic model was constructed for both axes. The linear and nonlinear models for the yaw and pitch axes were implemented and tested in MATLAB/Simulink. The same excitation signals used during system identification were applied to both models, and the simulated angular velocity outputs were recorded. These were compared against real system data, and model accuracy was evaluated numerically using RMS error values. Results showed that the linear model performed well only near its design conditions, whereas the nonlinear model incorporating friction and imbalance yielded higher accuracy in representing real behavior. Thus, the nonlinear models were adopted as the final system models for both axes. To ensure precise target alignment, high-performance motion control algorithms are required. Using current input as the control variable, various controllers were designed and tested in MATLAB/Simulink, including PI and Super Twisting Sliding Mode Controllers (ST-SMC), with and without feedforward terms. Sliding Mode Control directs the system toward a predefined sliding surface using the error between the reference signal and the feedback signal, aiming to keep the system on that surface. This control method provides fast response time while demonstrating robustness against model uncertainties and external disturbances. Once the system reaches the sliding surface, it is designed to remain on it, resulting in stable and reliable control behavior. The feedforward method is used to eliminate predictable disturbances in the system before they are handled by the controller. In gimbal systems, effects such as friction and mass imbalance can cause delayed responses and instability when controlled using feedback alone. Therefore, the feedforward approach is an important control strategy to enhance target tracking performance. The reason for not using the derivative term in the PI controller is that the control loop of the real system operates at a sampling frequency of 1000 Hz. Since the control signal is generated every 1 ms, it was considered that even a small amount of measurement noise could cause high-frequency oscillations in the control signal if derivative terms were used. Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimization was used to tune the controller gains based on objective functions such as IAE, ISE, ITAE, and ITSE. The designed controllers were tested in simulation under various sinusoidal and step angular velocity commands of different amplitudes and frequencies. Based on performance metrics such as settling time, overshoot, and tracking error, the best-performing controller gains were selected for experimental validation. In the optimization of controller gains using a genetic algorithm, the objective functions IAE, ISE, ITAE, and ITSE were employed to evaluate system performance from different perspectives. IAE emphasizes overall error magnitude while being insensitive to rapid changes; ISE penalizes large errors more heavily to reduce major deviations. ITAE applies a time-weighted penalty to errors, discouraging slow system responses, while ITSE considers both error magnitude and time to assess transient performance. These objective functions enable the selection of optimal controller gains based on various error and time-weighted performance criteria. Genetic algorithms are an optimization method inspired by natural selection and evolutionary biology processes. They are effectively used to solve complex, multi-parameter problems that are difficult to address analytically. Each parameter is defined as a gene, and candidate solutions containing these genes are expressed as chromosomes; the collection of these chromosomes forms a population. Each individual in the population is evaluated using an objective function, and new generations are created through elitism, selection, crossover, and mutation operations to obtain better solutions. This iterative process continues until a predefined stopping criterion is met. Due to these characteristics, genetic algorithms are widely used in engineering applications, particularly for gain optimization in control algorithm design. The optimized controllers were then tested on the real system using the same reference input signals from the simulations. This enabled a direct comparison between simulation and physical system performance. Based on experimental results, the controller yielding the best overall performance was selected. For both axes, the ST-SMC controller demonstrated superior results. To investigate the influence of cross-axis coupling due to inertia matrix effects during simultaneous dual-axis motion, identical angular velocity commands were applied to both axes using the final controllers. According to target tracking error analysis, the dual-axis operation did not significantly degrade control performance. Bandwidth—defined as the frequency range within which the control system can respond without major distortion or attenuation—was also analyzed. Higher bandwidth corresponds to faster and more precise responses. Frequency sweep signals were applied to both axes in simulation and on the real system, and frequency response plots were generated using input and gyroscope output data. Results showed that the bandwidth exceeded the target of 8 [Hz] for both axes, with good agreement between simulation and experimental values. To evaluate stabilization performance, 0 [deg/s] angular velocity commands were applied to both axes with the system mounted on a stationary platform. Simulation and real-world results were compared, showing no significant discrepancies. Any differences were attributed to modeling errors, system tolerances, sensor noise, cable tension, and environmental influences. Stabilization under external disturbances was also tested by applying sinusoidal signals mimicking APG and sine wave test tracks. Additionally, post-firing disturbance suppression time was assessed using a simulated 100 [deg/s], 80 [ms] step disturbance, representing a firing shock. When analyzing the gimbal system mechanism, friction has been identified as the most critical factor affecting robustness. This is because, throughout the operational life of the gimbal system, parameters such as mass, moment of inertia, mass imbalance, and sensor characteristics remain constant, whereas friction characteristics can vary significantly due to changes in temperature over time, mechanical wear, alterations in lubricant properties, and manufacturing tolerances. These variations are especially influential at low operating speeds, where static friction and stick-slip effects become more pronounced, potentially causing deviations in the system's dynamic behavior. Therefore, designing a controller that is robust against variations in friction parameters has become a critical requirement to ensure the robustness of the gimbal system. Monte Carlo simulations were performed for each control algorithm by randomly varying the friction model parameters of the axes ±20% for the azimuth axis and ±10% for the elevation axis. Based on the simulations conducted in MATLAB, it was concluded that both the azimuth and elevation axes exhibited sufficient robustness. This thesis demonstrates that simulation models incorporating both linear (inertia) and nonlinear (friction, imbalance, sensor uncertainty) dynamics can closely replicate real system behavior. Controllers optimized using Genetic Algorithms in simulation were found to meet performance requirements when implemented on the physical system. Overall, the study demonstrates that the proposed modeling and control strategies ensure accurate real-system performance, validating the robustness and applicability of the developed gimbal system design.
