Collective actions are defined as the set of behaviors performed by individuals who are members of the same social group, participating in actions such as protests and marches under the group identity, with the aim of improving the group's conditions and achieving greater gains. It has been observed that collective action studies are often examined in the context of anti-status quo movements. This thesis aims to fill a significant gap in the literature by examining the collective actions known as“Democracy Watches,”which emerged after the July 15th Coup Attempt and aimed to protect the status quo, within the context of the social identity approach. Among the collective action models developed through the Social Identity Approach, the Social Identity Model of Collective Action (SIMCA) suggests that individuals engage in collective action based on their existing social identities, while the Emerging Social Identity Model of Collective Action (EMSICA) proposes that new collective identities are formed during the action process and that individuals participate in collective actions through new identity identifications. In the thesis study, the main objective is to examine collective actions undertaken primarily to protect and defend the existing political system within the framework of Collective Action Social Identity Models (SIMCA-EMSICA), and to investigate the role of perceived threats to the existing political system and perceived identity leadership. For this purpose, a retrospective correlational study was conducted in this thesis. Data was collected online from 545 participants who participated in the actions that took place after the July 15th Coup Attempt. It was determined that 341 of these participants (210 men, 131 women) personally participated in the actions called“Democracy Watches,”which took place in the squares of different cities after the July 15th Coup Attempt. Statistical analyses were performed using the data collected from these individuals. The analyses were performed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and path analysis techniques available in the Jamovi 2.6 program. According to the analysis results, it was found that classical SIMCA did not fit the data well enough to predict the frequency of participation in Democracy Watches. It has been observed that identifications with the Republic of Turkey and political party identities do not directly predict the frequency of participation in collective actions. According to the findings, while perceived injustice among mediating variables did not significantly predict the frequency of participation in Democracy Watches, perceived group efficacy did. The revised model, with the addition of the identity leadership and perceived threat variables, did not fit the data well; however, identity leadership was found to moderate the frequency of participation in Democracy Watch through mediating variables. The revised EMSICA for pro-status quo actions, with the variables of identity leadership and perceived threat integrated into the model, fit the data quite well, and the model strongly explained participation in Democracy Watches. According to the findings, perceived injustice and perceived group efficacy significantly predicted the frequency of participation in collective actions through the“Democracy Watches”identity. As a result, it was concluded that both the classic EMSICA and the revised EMSICA, which was updated to explain pro-status quo actions, significantly explain the frequency of participation in collective actions. The findings obtained in the study have been discussed within the scope of the relevant literature.
