öz STAJ ÖĞRENCİLERİ VE UYGULAMA ÖĞRETMENLERİNİN KARAR VERME YETİLERİ: BİR DURUM ÇALIŞMASI Balbay, Seher Yüksek Lisans, ingiliz Dili Eğitimi Bölümü Tez Yöneticisi: Doç. Dr. Ülker Vaneı-Osam Temmuz 2000, 142 sayfa Bu çalışma, uygulama öğretmenleri ve staj öğrencilerinin karar verme yetilerini incelemektedir. Bu demografik çalışmada, staj öğrencilerinin ve uygulama öğretmenlerinin ders esnasında ders planından sapmalarını gerektiren kararlardaki farklılıkların ortaya konması amaçlamıştır. Bu nedenle, 7 staj öğrencisi ve 4 uygulama öğretmeninin birer dersi videoya çekilmiştir. Bu dersler, o dersi veren kişi ile birlikte izlenmiş, ders planından ne zaman ve neden saptıktan tartışılmıştır. Bu sırada yapılan mülakat teybe kaydedilmiş ve kayıtlar yazıya dökülmüştür. Araştırmaya katılanlar kendiseçtikleri bir başka ders için ders planından ne zaman ve neden çıktıklarını not ettikleri bir de form doldurmuşlardır. Bu formlar ve mülakat, kodlama metoduyla iki aşamada analiz edilmiştir. Diğer verileri desteklemek amacıyla katılımcılara dil öğrenme ve öğretmeye bakış açılarına ilişkin bir de anket uygulanmıştır. Çalışmanın verileri iki grup öğretmeni de ders planını değiştirmeye motive eden bazı farklı güdüler olduğunu göstermektedir. Bunun yanında, bu iki grup öğretmenin derste verdiği kararları etkileyen ortak nedenler de belirlenmiştir. Farklı nedenler 'zamanlama', 'sınıf yönetimi', 'disiplin' ve 'meslektaşlardan alınan tavsiye ve öneriler' olarak sıralanabilir. ABSTRACT INVESTIGATING THE DECISION MAKING SKILLS OF COOPERATING AND STUDENT TEACHERS OF ENGLISH: A CASE STUDY Balbay, Seher M. A., Program in English Language Teaching Supervisor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ülker Vancı-Osam July 2000, 142 pages The purpose of this study was to investigate the decision-making skills of cooperating and student teachers of English. This qualitative case study focused on the differences between cooperating teachers and student teachers when making decisions on diverting from the lesson plan as they teach. For this purpose, one teaching session for each of seven student teachers and four cooperating teachers was video taped. The researcher and each teacher involved in the study watched the video of their taped lesson, and the researcher interviewed the participant teacher about when and why s/he diverted from the lesson plan. These interviews were audio-taped and transcribed. The participant teachers were also asked to fill out a retrospective form about another lesson of their choice to answer when and why they diverted from their lesson plan. The transcriptions of the interviews iiiand the written retrospectives were analyzed by the researcher and an inter- rater using a coding system in two stages. The participants were also asked to fill out a questionnaire which tried to identify the participants' approach towards certain aspects of language learning and teaching with the aim of supporting the research findings. The findings of the study revealed that some motives of cooperating teachers and student teachers were the same while others were different when they were making decisions on diverting from the lesson plan as they taught. Cooperating teachers differed from student teachers in making decisions motivated by concerns about 'timing', 'classroom management', 'discipline' and 'specific suggestions from colleagues'. The motives shared by both cooperating teachers and stud©nt^ach©rs were 'student motivationV 'teaching unplanned new language', 'physical conditions' and 'student expectations'.
