Özet
153 ÖZET Bu çalışmanın amacı dördüncü sınıf Kara Harp Okulu öğrencilerin askeri İngilizce içeren okuma derslerindeki anlama becerilerini geliştirmede kelime öğretiminin önemini belirlemektir. Ayrıca bu çalışma, dördüncü sınıf Harbiyel ilerin okuma derslerinde takip ettikleri English Studies Series 5: Military Texts adlı kitabın kelime aktiviteleri bakımından sahip olduğu eksiklikler üzerinde durmakta, bu eksikliklerin sebep olduğu sorunları gidermesi amacıyla ve İngilizce dersi öğretim elemanlarının kitaptaki diğer üniteler için hazırlayabilecekleri aktiviteler için de örnek teşkil etmesi amacıyla kitaptan seçilmiş bir pasaja yönelik çeşitli kelime aktiviteleri sunmaktadır. Mevcut çalışma 5 bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölüm araştırmaya temel olan sorunu, çalışmanın amacını ve sınırlarını belirtmektedir. İkinci bölüm, konu ile.ilgili literatür taraması yapmakta, kelimeler ve kelimelerin formları ve anlamları arasındaki ilişkiyi açıklamakta, Kara Harp Okulunda üçüncü ve dördüncü sınıf öğrencilerine verilen askeri İngilizce derslerinde görüldüğü gibi, özel amaçlara yönelik İngilizce öğretiminde önemli bazı unsurların altını çizmekte ve temel kelime öğretim ve öğrenim teknik ve stratejilerini özetlemektedir. Üçüncü bölüm, dördüncü sınıf Harbiyelilere ve İngilizce dersi öğretim elemanlarına uygulanan anket sonuçlarının analiz ve yorumlarını içermektedir. Dördüncü bölüm, anket sonuçlarından elde edilen verilerin ışığı altında, English Studies Series 5: Military Texts adlı ders kitabından alınan bir okuma parçası için geliştirilmiş ek alıştırmaları sunmaktadır. Beşinci bölüm, çalışmanın kısa bir özetini yaparak, Harbiyeliler, öğretim elemanları ve Harp Okulundaki mevcut İngilizce öğretim programı için bazı öneri ve çıkarımlarda bulunmaktadır. 152 ABSTRACT This study aims to identify the role of vocabulary teaching in improving fourth-year cadets' comprehension in their Military English reading courses. It also focuses on the deficiencies or the limitations of their book English Studies Series 5: Military Texts in terms of the vocabulary activities that it includes, and suggest various vocabulary activities designed for a unit of the book in order to eradicate the problems that stem from these deficiencies of the book, and to constitute a sample for the English language instructors in designing vocabulary activities for other units in the book. The study consists of 5 chapters. Chapter 1 presents the problem to be discussed, and also covers the purpose and the scope of the study. Chapter 2 gives a review of related literature, explains the relationship between the words and their forms and meanings, and underlines the main aspects of ESP, which is closely related to the courses given to the third- and fourth-year cadets at the Military Academy. This chapter also summarizes some basic learning strategies and teaching techniques of vocabulary. Chapter 3 includes the analysis and the interpretation of the data collected from the questionnaires administered both to the fourth-year cadets and the English language instructors. In the light of the results obtained from the questionnaires, Chapter 4 introduces some supplementary vocabulary activities designed for a reading passage from the book English Studies Series 5: Military Texts. Chapter 5 is the summary of the study, and introduces some recommendations and implications on account of the cadets, instructors and the English instruction program at the Military Academy.
