öz ÖĞRENCİLERİN YABANCI DİLDE ÖZET ÇIKARMA YETENEĞİ İLE OKUMA- ANLAMA SORULARINI CEVAPLAMA BAŞARISI ARASINDAKİ İLİŞKİNİN ANALİZİ AKSOY, Ayşe Pınar Yüksek Lisans Tezi, İngiliz Dili Eğitimi Tez Yöneticisi : Yrd. Doç. Dr. Berrin Uçkun Eylül, 1999, 140 Sayfa Bu tez öğrencilerin yabancı dilde özet çıkarma yeteneği ile okuma anlama sorularını cevaplamadaki başarısı arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu çalışmaya 1998 - 1999 akademik yılında Gaziantep Üniversitesi Batı Dilleri ve Edebiyatları Bölümünün İngilizce hazırlık programına devam eden 25 öğrenci katılmıştır. Veriler öğrencilerin yazılı özet tutanaklarından ve çoktan seçmeli testlerden toplanmıştır. Bu öğrencilerden bir hafta arayla anlatışsal ve hikaye türündeki iki parçayı okuyup, her biri için kısa bir özet yazmaları istenmiştir. Özetlerle parçalar toplandığında, öğrencilere her parça için sekiz sorudan oluşan çoktan seçmeli bir test verilmiştir. Öğrenci özetleri araştırmacı tarafından oluşturulan model özetin ışığı altında idea - unifier ( fikir birimler) dikkate alınarak değerlendirilmiştir. Her bir özetteki fıikir birimler puanlandırılmış ve yüzdeleri bulunmuştur. Çıkan sonuçlar daha sonra çoktan seçmeli teste verilen doğru cevapların yüzdeleriyle karşılaştırılmıştır. Bu işlem her iki parça için tekrarlandırılmıştır. Verilerin analiziSPSS standart istatistiksel analiz programıyla yapılmıştır. Çalışmanın bulguları öğrencilerin 1) Hikaye türündeki parçanın özetini çıkarıp, çoktan seçmeli testi cevapladıktan sonra aldıkları notlar arasında; 2) Anlatışsal parçanın özetini çıkarıp, çoktan seçmeli testi cevapladıktan sonra aldıkları notlar arasında; 3) Parça türüne göre özet çıkarma işinden aldıkları notlar arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki olduğunu göstermiştir. ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STUDENTS' SUMMARISING ABILITY AND THEIR SUCCESS IN ANSWERING READING COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS IN THEIR SECOND LANGUAGE AKSOY, Ayşe Pınar M.A. in English Language Teaching Supervisor : Asst. Prof. Dr. Berrin UÇKUN September, 1999, 140 Pages This thesis aims at investigating the relationship between students' summarising ability and their success in answering reading comprehension questions in their second language. 25 students attending the Preparatory English Program of the Western Languages and Literatures Department at the University of Gaziantep in the academic year 1998 - 1999 participated in this study. The data were collected through written summary protocols and multiple - choice tests. The students were asked to read two texts of narrative and expository nature and write a brief summary for each text - type in one week interval. Once the summaries and texts were collected, the students were given a multiple - choice test for each text consisting of eight questions. Student summaries were evaluated in terms of idea - units following the model summary produced by the researcher. The idea - units from each summary were scored and their percentages of the correct answers of the multiple - choice test. This procedure was repeated for both texts. The data were computed using a standard statistical analysis program, namely SPSS. IllThe findings of the study indicated that there was a statistically significant relationship between 1 ) The scores the students received on the summarising task and on the multiple - choice test of the narrative text; 2) The scores the students received on the summarising task and on the multiple - choice test of the expository text; 3) The subjects' scores on the summarising task according to the text - type. However, there was no statistically significant relationship between the subjects' scores on the multiple - choice tests for both texts. Science Code : ELT 599 IV
