öz KURTARICILARI EĞİTMEK: OSMANLI İMPARATORLUĞUNDA EĞİTİMİN DÖNÜŞÜMÜ VE SEÇKİNCİLİK 1876-1918 Yalçınkaya, Alper M.S., Sosyoloji Bölümü Danışman: Yrd. Doç. Dr. Ayşe Saktanber Aralık 1999, 132 sayfa Bu çalışma Osmanlı İmparatorluğu' nda eğitimin organizasyonunu seçkincilik ve seçkinlerarası rekabet kavramları ile ilişkilendirerek incelemektedir. Osmanlı toplumunun temel tanımlanma biçimi olan yönetenler ve yönetilenler anlayışının eğitim terimleriyle de açıklanabileceği, bu ayrımın eğitim görmüş olanlar ve olmayanlar şeklinde de ifade edilebileceği gösterilmektedir. Osmanlı toplumunda seçkinlerin homojen bir bütün olmadığı ve eğitimin rekabet halindeki seçkin gruplarının tanımlanmasında rol oynadığı da vurgulanmaktadrr. Dönüşüm süreci üzerinde yürütülen çalışma Klasik Çağ'daki yapının bu döneme büyük etkisi olduğunu, bu etkinin özellikle devlete atfedilen önemin sürekliliğiyle ilgili olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu nedenle eğitimin devleti kurtaracak seçkinleri üretme yolu olarak görülmeye başladığı tespit edilmektedir. Bu gözlem rakip seçkin grupları arasında süren mücadele çerçevesinde incelenmekte ve bu grupların devletin kurtarıcısı olan seçkin kavramının ortaya çıkışındaki göreli rolleri tartışılmaktadır.

ABSTRACT TRAINING THE SAVIOURS: EDUCATIONAL TRANSFORMATION AND ELITISM IN THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE 1876-1918 Yalçınkaya, Alper M.S., Department of Sociology Supervisor: Assoc.Prof. Dr. Ayşe Saktanber December 1999, 132 pages This study examines the educational organisation of the Ottoman empire in relation to the concepts of elitism and competing elite groups. It is illustrated that the situation of the elite in Ottoman society can be translated promptly to educational terms due to the fact that the basic description of Ottoman society in terms of the rulers and the ruled can also be expressed as the educated and the uneducated. It is also stressed that the elite in Ottoman society was not a homogenous unity and educational difference was a basic component of the definition of competing elite groups. The focus on the period of transformation reveals that the situation in the Classical Age influenced the following eras due to the permanent emphasis on the essential importance of the state. This fact is understood to be a reason for the emergence of a conceptualisation of education as a way to produce the elite to save the state. This observation is linked to the struggle between elite groups and their relative roles in the emergence of the concept of the elite as the saviour of the state.
