Özet
ÖZET Platon'un fikirlerinin yeniden yorumlanıp açıklanması olan Yeni Platoncu felsefe, batı düşünce ve edebiyatında tartışılmaz bir etki yaratmıştır. Geç antik çağda Plotinus tarafından öncülüğü yapılmış olan bu akım, daha sonra Rönesans döneminde, Floransa Yeni Platoncuları tarafından detaylı olarak incelenip daha bilinir hale getirilmiştir. Birçok Rönesans sanatçı ve yazan eserlerine bu Yeni Platoncu fikirleri eklemişlerdir. Aynı şekilde, Rönesans İngiltere'sinde de Edmund Spenser (1552-1599) ve bazı çağdaşları Yeni Platonculuğu, eserlerindeki sevgi, güzellik, ölümsüzlük ve benzer temaları işlerken bir referans olarak kullanmışlardır. Bu çalışmanın amacı Spenser' in Yeni Platonculuktan nasıl etkilendiğini ve şiirleri, The Fowre Hymnes. The Amoretti ve The Epithalamion'un ne derece Yeni Platonculuk izleri taşıdığının gösterilmesidir. Bu tez bir Giriş, iki ana bölüm ve bir de Sonuç'tan oluşmaktadır. Giriş bölümünde, Yeni Platonculuk hakkında genel bilgi verilmekte olup Plotinus ve daha sonra da Rönesans Yeni Platoncularının çalışmaları ele alınmaktadır. Daha sonra, bu bilgiler ile Spenser' in eserlerindeki edebi ve kültürel özellikler arasında ilişkiler kurulmuştur. Tezin ana bölümlerinde, The Fowre Hymnes. The Amoretti ve The Epithalamion şiirlerinin Yeni Platonculuk açısından detaylı temasal açıklamasını sunulmaktadır. Sonuç bölümünde ise, Yeni Platonculuğun Spenser üzerinde hissedilir bir etki bıraktığı ve bu akımın onun şiirlerine yansıdığı belirlenmiştir. Bu anlamda, İngiliz Rönesans edebiyatına reddedilemez bir katkısı olan Spenser'ınm ilgili eserlerinin incelenmesinin ardından onun Yeni Platonculuğun en önemli temsilcisi olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.

IV ABSTRACT Neoplatonic philosophy, which is a reinterpretation of Plato's ideas, had a lasting impact on Western thought and literature. It was pioneered by Plotinus in the late antiquity, which then was elaborated on and made popular by the Florentine Neoplatonists in the Renaissance. Most Renaissance artists and writers included Neoplatonic ideas in their works. Similarly, in Renaissance England, Edmund Spenser (1552-1599) and some of his contemporaries added Neoplatonic elements to their writings and used Neoplatonism as a framework of reference for the representation and expression of certain concepts like love, beauty, immortality and similar themes. Hence, the aim of this study is to demonstrate how Spenser was influenced by Neoplatonism and to what extent his poems, The Fowre Hymnes. The Amoretti and The Epithalamion embody vestiges of Neoplatonic ideas. This thesis consists of an introductory chapter, two main chapters and a concluding chapter. The introduction covers a general account of Neoplatonism and the activities of Plotinus, and the Renaissance Neoplatonists. This is then related to the literary and cultural context of Spenser's writings. The main chapters of the thesis provide a detailed thematic study of the The Fowre Hymnes. The Amoretti and The Epithalamion from the point of view of Neoplatonic ideas. In this thesis it is concluded that the manifest influence of Neoplatonism on Spenser is frequently reflected in his poetry. In this sense, his contribution to English Renaissanceliterature cannot be denied, as he was the major representative of Neoplatonism in England.
