In the era of digital economy, cryptocurrencies empowered by blockchain technology, has created a new wave reaching multibillion-dollar valuation for the digital coins in circulation. Banking sector, due to its responsive characteristics to the technological advancements in financial spheres, remained at the centre of global attention, where banks acted agile on testing and using crypto-currencies as payment intermediators. This study analyses cryptocurrencies as potential payment intermediaries for banks on international and national money transfers while comparing the promises and reality. At a glance, cryptocurrency hype is not baseless where anonymity, transparency, and security are the key promises of blockchain empowered digital money. However, this study finds that cryptocurrencies are far from useful and safe for bank use in money transfers for extensive overvaluation on cryptocurrency prices, network security problems, high volatility, and primitive financial infrastructure in cryptocurrency markets. Yet, blockchain technology without involvement of cryptocurrencies is open for innovation in banking and financial services, as long as banks invest in mutual development of closed blockchain networks while allocating their resources on technological progression.
