Urban air mobility is a new shape of air transportation which is on the rise for more efficient and sustainable travel in highly populated cities. Paving the way to safe air travel of urban air mobility, the European Aviation Safety Agency developed the first component of regulatory framework to enable the safe operation of vertical take-off and landing aircraft [1]. This trend drives more start-up and other major aerospace companies to develop new and different concepts for VTOL aircraft such as multi-copters, tiltrotors and tilt-wings. As a path to the reality of urban air transportation opened, the need for finding the optimal aircraft configuration for VTOL remains as a design challenge for engineers. This individual research project aims to investigate the aerodynamic and aeroelastic effects and capabilities of folding wing tips and their implementation to future eVTOL aircraft. Given the baseline aircraft, which was an ultra-light box tilt-wing concept, aerodynamic characteristics were examined at first step using ANSYS and compared to baseline aircraft results. As a result, a concept change was decided for improved cruise efficiency and aerodynamic characteristics. The finite element model of base aircraft was provided. Modal and gust response analysis were performed in Nastran for base aircraft before carrying the same process for the proposed aircraft configuration with foldable outer wing. The gust response analysis of foldable outer wing section was performed by treating the wing as a passive folding and twisting gust alleviation device.
