A political party may be negatively influenced if it has a leader in favour of corruption. Nonetheless, previous research in different contexts has shown that groups are more tolerant towards their transgressive leaders compared to a regular ingroup member, and highly identified group members are less critical towards the group in an intergroup competition. This study investigated how the context and level of group identification affect evaluations towards the party leader condoning bribery. A sample group of 122 participants from the United Kingdom were recruited via the online platform Prolific Academic. The results of the present study demonstrate that party leaders are evaluated more positively than MPs when the party supporters take into account the group inclusion and the group prototypicality. However, party supporters use consistent criteria when stating their voting intentions or evaluating either an MP or a party leader who validates transgression. Moreover, results do not confirm that context and level of party identification have an impact on evaluations of party supporters. Implications of these findings and directions for future research are discussed.
