Özet
Osmanlı imparatorluğu 17 ile 19. yüzyıllarda pek çok seyyahın ilgisini çekmiş ve imparatorluk, bu dönem boyunca birçok ziyaretçiyi misafir etmiştir. Yapılan bu ziyaret ve gezilerde seyyahların kaleme aldıkları yazılarla imparatorluğun o dönemki sosyokültürel yapısı, toplumsal ve saray hakkındaki bilgiler günümüze kadar ulaşmıştır. Bu tezde, sözü edilen yüzyıllarda İngiliz ve Hollandalı altı seyyahın Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'na yaptıkları yolculuklarından Osmanlıların giyim kuşamı ile ilgili ortak ve farklı görüşlerin incelenmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Bu İngiliz ve Hollandalı seyyahlara ait eserlerin mukayesesi her asır için ayrı ayrı yapılmış; ayrıca İngiltere, Hollanda ve Osmanlı İmparatorluğu arasındaki 300 yıllık ilişkiye de değinilmiştir. İlk olarak Hollandalı ressam ve gezgin Cornelius de Bruyn'in (1652-1726) seyahatnamesi incelenip Osmanlı topraklarında ikamet eden İngiliz din âlimi John Covel'ın (1638-1722) seyahatnamesiyle karşılaştırılmıştır. Aynı şekilde Hollandalı gezgin, yazar ve Doktor Pieter van Woensel'in (1747-1808) seyahatnamesi, İngiliz aristokrat, yazar ve şairi olan Lady Mary Wortley Montagu'nun (1689-1762) mektuplarıyla beraber ele alınmıştır. Son olarak Hollandalı gezgin ve ressam Marius Alexander Jacques Bauer'in (1867-1932) Hollanda'daki ailesine ve arkadaşına yazdığı mektuplar, Lady Emelia Hornby'nin (1826 -1866) annesine, kız kardeşine, kocasına ve tanıdıklarına yazdığı mektuplarla mukayese edilmiştir. Bu altı eser detaylıca incelenip Osmanlı kıyafetlerini nasıl ele aldıkları açısından mukayeseli bir şekilde incelenmiştir.

The Ottoman Empire attracted the attention of many travellers between the 17th and 19th centuries, and the empire hosted many visitors during this period. With the writings of the travellers during these visits and travels, information about the sociocultural structure of the empire at that time, and the palace have survived to the present day. This thesis aims to examine the common and different views of the British and Dutch travellers over the Ottomans' clothing style through their travels around the Empire in the aforementioned centuries. A comparison of the works of these English and Dutch travellers is made separately for each century, and the 300-year relationship between England, the Netherlands and the Ottoman Empire is also mentioned. First, the travelogue of Dutch painter and traveller Cornelius de Bruyn (1652-1726) is examined and compared with the travelogue of John Covel (1638-1722), an English religious scholar who resided in Ottoman lands. Likewise, the travelogue of Dutch traveller, writer, and doctor Pieter van Woensel (1747-1808) is discussed together with the letters of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762), an English aristocrat, writer and poet. Finally, the letters of the Dutch traveller and painter Marius Alexander Jacques Bauer (1867-1932) to his family and friends in the Netherlands are compared with the letters of Lady Emelia Hornby (1826-1866) to her mother, sister, husband, and acquaintances. These six works are analysed in detail and compared in terms of their treatment of Ottoman dress.
