Özet
Bu tez beden sosyolojisi diye anılan alanın kavramsal ve teorik çerçevesini ele almaktadır. îki soru üzerinden, bedenin sosyolojik önemi ortaya çıkarılmak istenmiştir. Bu sorulardan ilki, bedenin Batı düşüncesinde nasıl değerlendirildiğidir. Bu soruya yanıt bulmak amacıyla, toplumbilimden felsefeye ve feminizme çeşitli kuramsal çalışmalarda bedenin konumu ve ele alınış tarzı ortaya konulmuştur. İkinci soru ise beden sosyolojisi diye anılan alanın sınırları ve niteliğinin ne olduğudur. Bu sınırları ortaya koymak ve beden sosyolojisinin çözümleme alanını tanımlamak amacıyla, iç beden ve dış beden ayrımı yapılmıştır. İç beden çözümlemesinde, sosyolojinin biyolojiden, anatomiye ve tıptan, bilim tarihi ve felsefeye kadar birçok alanla ortaklaşa çalışması gereği vurgulanmıştır. Diğer yandan, dış beden analizi ise bedenin kamusal ve özel alanda temsilinin araştırılmasına yöneliktir. Bu çalışmada, dış beden analizinde, temsiliyeti ele alması nedeniyle göstergebilim ve iletişimden, postmodernist çözümlemelere kadar birçok alanda bedenle ilişkili çözümlemelerin dikkate alınması gerekliliği vurgulanmıştır.

This thesis elaborates on the theoretical and conceptual framework of the sociology of the body and deals with two main issues in the area in question. The first issue concerns the treatment of the body in Western thought. In order to analyze this issue various areas in social theory from sociology to philosophy and feminism are discussed with respect to their treatment of the body. The second issue concerns the content and the limits of the sociology of the body. In order to analyse these, a distinction is made between the internal and the external body. In the analysis of the internal body, it is stressed that sociology is linked to many areas from biology and medicine to the histoy of science and philosophy. On the other hand the analysis of the external body is directed towards the representation of the body in public and in private space. Because the sociological analysis of the external body is related to representation, it is therefore linked to other areas of study such as semiology, communication theory and postmodernist analyses and approaches.
