This thesis analyzes the representations of slums in India through primary sources, such as Geoffrey Moorhouse's Calcutta, Gregory David Roberts' Shantaram, Vikas Swarup's Q&A, Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, and various travel blogs. All these works are to be analyzed through a framework of the gaze theory and subaltern studies. The gaze theory is applied to determine the nature of encounters and the power dynamics between the slum dwellers and people who represent them in literature or media. The gaze theory will help establish that such representers (people from the Global North, or rather privileged Indian people) reaffirm their positions as the subject, whereas the slum inhabitants are reduced to being the object, resulting in an asymmetrical relationship between two sides, which is why it is argued that slum dwellers are still the subaltern subjects who cannot speak for themselves, as they do not have a voice of their own, and we depend on their representation by others to learn about them.
