Calculation of mathematical models, design of stabilising control systems and generation of locomotion trajectories for a twelve degree of freedom (DOF) biped robot are presented. The robot has seven DOF in the sagittal plane and five DOF in the lateral plane. Permanent magnet DC motors with speed reduction gearboxes drive the robot joints. The relative angles between adjacent joints are measured with potentiometers. The robot weighs about 18kg and it is 175cm tall. Approximate planar dynamic models are obtained using Kane's equations. Non-linear models are linearized around the vertical and discretized with 10ms sampling time. Independent stabilizing controllers are designed for each plane. Optimal feedback gains for position and velocity feedbacks are calculated using Linear Quadratic Regulator Theory (LQR). Reduced order observers are implemented to estimate relative angular velocities. The stabilizing controllers include integral action terms to eliminate steady state errors and feedforward terms to speed up the transient. Locomotion trajectories for walking forward, backward, side ways and climbing up and down small steps are generated from the solutions of planar kinematic equations. Experimental results show that we have achieved a 100% success rate when walking forward, backward and side ways. The success rate is about 30% for climbing up and down a 5cm high step. The maximum speed for walking forward is 45cm step length in 8 seconds. Backlash in the gearboxes is one of the factors that prevents increasing walking speeds. Climbing steps larger than 5cm in height can only be achieved by improving the mechanical design of the robot to allow larger torques at the joints. Suggestions for future work are also given.
