ÖZET ÜNİVERSİTE Ö?RENCİLERİNİN BENLİK SAYGISI DÜZEYLERİ İLE AKADEMİK BAŞARILARI ARASINDAKİ İLİŞKİNİN İNCELENMESİ İNANÇ, Necmeddin Yüksek Lisans Tezi, Eğitim Bilimleri Tez Yöneticisi.: Yrd.Doç. Dr. Necmiye Karataş Eylül, 1997 İM sayfa Bu çalışmada Gaziantep Üniversitesi Mühendislik Fakültesi son sınıf öğrencilerinim benlik saygısı düzeyleri ile akademik basanları arasındaki ilişkinin saptanması amaçlandı. Bu amaçla 169 öğrenciye Coopersmith Benlik Saygısı Envanteri uygulandı.Bilgi noksanlığı nedeniyle 6 kişi değerlendirme dışı bırakıldı. Değerlendirmeye alınan 163 öğrencinin %14.7'si kız, % 85.3'ü erkeklerden oluşup yaş ortalamaları 24.6'dır. Öğrencilerin benlik saygısı puan ortalamaları 65, standart sapması 15.64 olarak saptandı. Araştırmada elde edilen verilerin çözümlenmesinde“korelasyon”ve“ t ”testi teknikleri kullanıldı. Buna göre öğrencilerin benlik saygısı düzeyleri ile akademik başarılan arasında.01 düzeyinde düşük (r:.25), fakat anlamlı bir ilişki olduğu saptandı. Akademik başarıları yüksek olan öğrenciler ile düşük olan öğrencilerin benlik saygısı düzeyleri arasında.05 düzeyinde anlamlı bir farklılık olduğu belirlendi ( t : 2.04 ). Kız ve erkek öğrencilerin benlik saygısı düzeyleri arasında.05 düzeyinde anlamlı bir farklılık bulunmadı (t: 1.27). öte yandan, öğrenimlerim yıl kaybına uğramadan bitiren öğrencilerle yıl kaybına uğrayarak bitirenlerin benlik saygısı düzeyleri arasında anlamlı bir fark saptanmadı ( t : 1.74 ; p > 05). Ancak,“iki yıl ve daha fazla”yıl kaybı olan öğrenciler ile hiç yıl kaybı olmayanların benlik saygısı düzeyleri arasında.01 düzeyinde anlamlı bir farklılık bulunduğu saptandı ( t : 2.69 ). Bu sonuç, öğrencilerin uğradıkları yıl kayıplarının artmasıyla benlik saygısı düzeylerinin önemli ölçüde ve olumsuz bir biçimde etkilendiğini göstermektedir.

ABSTRACT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS1 LEVEL OF SELF-ESTEEM AND THEIR ACADEMIC ACHLEVEMENT İNANÇ, Necmeddin MjL in Educational Sciences Supervisor ; Assist Prof. Dr. Necnûye Karataş September 1997, 103 pages The aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between the level of self- esteem and academic achievement of the final years students in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Gaziantep. 163 students of average 24.6 year of age were administered Coopersmith Self- Esteem Inventory and 6 of the students were discarded from the study due to Tack of sufficient information. The sampling consisted of 14.7 % female and 85.3 % male students. The mean of the students' self-esteem scores was found to be 65 and the standard deviation was calculated- to be 15.64. In order to determine the relationship between students' self-esteem and academie achievement, the correlation techniques“Pearson-Product Moment Correlation Coefficient”and“ t * test were employed. The results show that there is a low out statistically significant relationship between the students' self- esteem scores and their academic achievement (t:.25; p<.01). The findings also suggest that there is a statistically significant difference between the self-esteem scores of the students with higher academic achievement records and the self- esteem scores of the students with lower academic records ( t : 2.04 -, p <.05 ). No statistically significant difference is observed between the self-esteem scores of jnate and female students (t:1.27;p>.05). There is also no statistically significant difference between the self-esteem scores of the students considering the priority given when making *. ehoice to enter the university (i.e. between the students who had entered the university according to their first ? choice and last 6 choice, t : 0.09 ). Moreover, there is no statistically significant difference between the self-esteem scores ©f the students who had graduated from Gaziantep University in 5 years < 1 year prep. school + 4 years) and self-esteem scores of those who had graduated in 6”years ( with one year delay : 1.74 ; p >.05 ). iiHowever, the findings suggest that there is a statistically significant difference between the self- esteem scores of the regular students and the students who had graduated in seven years or more {t: 2.69; p<.01 ). This suggests that the students' self- esteem is affected negatively by the academic "failure and year loss in Higher Education to a great extent.
