83 ABSTRACT THE ACZYMENDIES AS A RELIGIOUS GROUP Çakmak Muhammet A Masters Thesis done for the Department of Sociology of Religion, in the Section of Philosophy and Religious Science Thesis Advisor: Prof.Dr. Münir KOŞTAŞ May, 1997 The purpose of this study is to make a contribution to the studies on sociology of religion in Türkiye by identifying and examining the Aczymendies movement as a religious group. It has been thought that studies on religious matters in Türkiye have not yet gained grounds for providing researchers with any profound literature. As a religious group which has been at the forefront of religious discussions, it holds an important role in the area of sociology of religion. The Aczymendies movement was first formed under the leadership of Müslim Gündüz, and it later spread throughout Türkiye. It is claimed, that comments from Risale-i Nur, which was written by Said Nursi. were used for the building blocks of the Aczymendies movement. Although the Aczymendies movement introduced itself as a new version of the Risale-i Nur movement, this claim was later denied by the Risale-i Nur community. The Aczymendies movement as religious phenomenon, was formed entirely around the expectations, ideals, beliefs and dreams of its charismatic leader. Müslim Gündüz. Socio-economic and cultural condition such as ignorance about religious subjects, poverty, unemployment and community relations are the dynamics that have given impetus to the development of Aczymendies movement. After Müslim Gündüz was arrested in January of 1997, the movement began to lose its unity and it has now entered into a state of dissolution. TA HB»SB*Eî!l WW|
