Özet

Polisiye türü ve polisiye romanın genelde edebi türe özgün bir formül ve çerçeve içerisinde yazıldığı düşünülür. Ancak, bu tezin amacı, 1970'li yıllardan sonra, klasik polisiye roman yazınında, cinsiyet ve ataerkil ideoloji ile bağlantıları olan ciddi bir yol ayrımı yaşandığı savını araştırmak ve mümkünse ispatlamaktır. P.D. James'in kadınların profesyonel tercihleri ve gelişimlerini engelleyen sınırları sorgulayan ve yıkmaya çalışan 1970'lerin“yeni kadın”kavramını örnekleyen detektif figürünü resmettiği Kadınlara Göre Değil (1972) adlı kitabıyla başlayan bu edebi yol ayrımı, Martin Amis'in, özellikle kurgusal detektifin geleneksel karakter tasviri, dilin daima polisiye türüne özgü bir biçimde kullanılışı, gerilimin her zaman tepe noktasına ulaştığı ve çözümlendiği alışılagelmiş anlatım tarzı, ve suçun hep benzer türde ve özellikte olması ve sonuçlarının hep aynı şekilde cezalandırılması gibi polisiye roman türüne has klişeleri yıktığı ve aynı zamanda polis teşkilatında çalışan bir kadın detektifin bu maskülen ortamda var olmasının zorluklarını ve belki de imkansızlığını ele alan Gece Treni (1997) gibi eserlerle devam eder. Graham Swift'in Günyüzü (2003) adlı romanı bu tartışmaları hem daha ileri noktalara taşır hem de türe özgü bilindik anlatı yapılarını alt üst eder ve bu edebi alt üst olma, klasik polisiye romanlarındaki tipik“kurtarıcı”detektif figürünün de alt üst edilmesiyle paralel olarak verilir. Swift'in romanında detektif figürü, toplumu işlenen suçtan kurtarmak istemeyen veya bu yeteneğe sahip olamayan ve suçun bozduğu düzenin yeniden kurulmasını sağlayamayan ya da bu konularla ilgilenmeyen bir anti-kahramana veya anti-detektife dönüştürülür. Aynı doğrultuda klasik detektif figürünün geleneksel azami otoritesi ve polisiye romanda alışılagelmiş tasvir eden“erkek bakışı”gücünü ve otoritesini, özellikle kadınlar karşısında, kaybetmiş olarak resmedilir. Çalışmada ele alınan üç romanın, polisiye türüne özgü yapıları yıkmasının geleneksel kadın ve erkek ilişkilerinin ve toplumdaki tipik rollerinin sorgulamasıyla paralel olduğu görülür.

Detective fiction and detective novel have always been stigmatized as a formulaic convention with strict generic features and definite boundaries, yet, the argument of this dissertation is to claim a significant generic deviation taking place after 1970s with repercussions on arguments about gender and patriarchal ideology. Beginning with P.D. James's An Unsuitable Job for a Woman (1972) which portrays a female detective as a representative for the“new woman”of 1970s subverting the stereotypical detective masculine in the genre and the patriarchal boundaries set around women's professional preferences and growth, the deviation continues with Martin Amis's Night Train (1997) which not only challenges the generic traditions of the detective novel particularly in the areas of characterization of the fictional detective, the specific use of language in the genre, the triangular climactic plot and the denouement following the climax, the nature and type of the crime and its repercussions, but also draws attention to the difficulty and perhaps impossibility to survive in an extremely masculine working environment in a patriarchal society, that is the police officer. Graham Swift's The Light of Day (2003), furthers the deviation and subverts the traditional narrative structure of classic detective novels, and the detective as a“saviour”in classic examples of detective novel is transformed into an anti-hero or an anti-detective who cannot or will not either save the society from the crime or restore the order disturbed by the crime. Moreover, the traditional supreme authority and the male gaze of conventional detective figures in the genre are challenged in Swift's novel to an extent that obviously depower the gazer and question its authority against women. The dissertation, thus, concludes that not only do these three novels explored in the study undermine various generic traditions of classic detective novel, but also the detective figures presented in these works challenge stereotypical gender roles in patriarchy.
