In this study, the field equations of hyperelastic solids are written in the balance form. Then the isovector fields of the symmetry groups associated with the given system of balance equations are determined. The method which is used in this thesis mainly depends on Cartan's geometric method of formulating partial differential equations in terms of exterior differential forms. If the ideal of forms which is equivalent to the system of differential equations is closed then it can be integrated. Partial differential equations which determine similarity solutions corresponding to some symmetry groups of homogenous isotropic solids are given. The equation of motion of hyperelastic solids in the absence of body forces are given by âk (&) = I (“o(x)^). (1) where po(X) is the given density of material in the reference configuration and E = E(F,X) is the strain energy function. Equations (1) can be written in the balance form as follows: dX] r = 0, k = 1,2,3;T = 1,2,3,4 (2) by defining S*ir = ;~r-, T = K = 1,2,3 Efc4 = -/>o(XH,r = 4. In order to determine the isovector field which is given by (4), the unknown functions $r-, 9 and wk which satisfy the following equations must be determined. dBkK dVk J 89 ^ dV \,vJM>k ^ d$K V n (5) dBkK (^VkdBkKl? dVk“ dVk oXK at axn avn axn + 1 dp0{X) _?M d9 Ck /?o(X) dXL dt dxn ** °**+**»LFmK = 0, (6) dXLÖFkKdXK dXLdFkKdxn dBkK 6BkL (WW 1 dppCX) \ ”^k + m^“ {°KkLl + °LkKl) \dl + dx~nVn ' Po(X) dXL $V +CNkLi (H^ + i£FnN) + CmKl \m; + ~d^FnN) {CxnU + CluKi) = 0. For the sake of simplicity the equations (9) and (10) are homogenized by defining a new strain energy function E as follows E = S + a0(X)J + akK(X)-^- + vkK(X)FkK + 0(X) vmNow the equations (9) and (10) can be written as homogenous equations of the function S as follows: \rhFiL+-dxr)dFü.~2blE-° -qjc-Fin + (a0 - b2)FlL + elmnanFmL + dXL dS dFlL -*Ldxl + (- dXL - 2&2 - 2a0 + Kx S = 0 (11) (12) For an entirely arbitrary S for the solution of the equations (11), (12) the isovector field takes the following form <P = 2aQt + h Wk = -xdkt3 + -fkt2 + mkt + nk o I (13) If &i = 0 then the equation (11) is satisfied identically whereas the equation (12) determines uniquely the form of S. The isovector field corresponding to this case becomes MX) $ = 2M + h i (14) 1 Wk = [(ao - b2)Ski + ekimam] x\ + ^dkt3 + -fkt2 + \kt + fJ.k(X). In hyperelastic solids, C and X are the arguments of strain energy function. If the equations (9) and (10) are rewritten for this structure of strain energy function and homogenized by defining a new strain energy function as E = t + üoVÎIÎc + W(X), then one can arrive at the following equations which are homogenous equations of S. _ (“ay- + (°0 - h)^ML ) CmN ( d$L V dXL + dCLN '^BXl - 2&2 - 2a0 + Kx ] S = 0.).- (15) IXb1[CLN-^- + 2Z] = 0. (16) Special Cases i) Homogenous materials: In this case, E is independent of X and po is constant. Some Similarity solutions: If a particular isovector field is chosen, then the associated similarity solution is determined by the solution of the following equations $K(X1,X2,X3)^ + m^ + MXuX2,X3,t,xl) = 0. (31) For the solution of (31), components of the isovector field are given by (29). For the sake of simplicity, the components of isovector field may be taken as $;<. = r0XK + CK, * = 2M + 63, Wk = (ao - h)xk- xiiFor this choice of isovector field xk(X.,t) is determined as follows xk(X,t) = Uk(tK)(t + h)13 where Xk + (*k Ck h r0 (i + 7)a r0 2&2 2o2 If (32) substituted into (1) we obtain the following differential equations (32) (33) ld£K { V He J d*x I He V I He J da I^ (do iiiil\ IIIc IZ+3 d-Ki &KL +~n[ [dVx + im) KL ~ JnfKMCML\Uk4 = Po [oc2Uk,KLiKU + («2 - 2a0 + a)Uk,KİK + 0(0 - l)Uk] (34) where n, tti, tt2 and cr defined by and ft = ao + &2 To + «o - h ' Xa=m ör = <T(7rı,7T2)- XUl
