This business analysis report is analysing and examining the performance and financial statements of AstraZeneca Plc. and Genus Plc. in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. Biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries are two research based overlapping sectors, becoming more important and popular in the recent years with increasing population and the number of unmet treatments for human or animal diseases in the world. While biotechnology companies focus more on research and development (R&D), pharmaceutical firms undertake drug production but doing R&D for a new drug can take a long time besides being costly (Lazonick, 2011). On the other hand, animal biotechnology industry is working on animal genetics to produce healthier animals and higher quality animal products (Faber & et al, 2003). AstraZeneca and Genus Plc. are both in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. However, AstraZeneca Plc. is a leading pharmaceutical business doing R&D, producing and marketing drugs whilst Genus Plc. is a market leader in animal biotechnology sector. These are successful companies in their own specialist areas. There are major research therapy areas of AstraZeneca Plc., oncology, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, respiratory, inflammation and autoimmunity, neuroscience, infection and vaccines. Genus Plc. produces superior genes and animal protein to obtain high quality meat and dairy products. Financial ratio analysis is used to examine the financial performance of these companies and swot analysis is applied to analyse them externally and internally.
