NUMERICAL ANALYSES OF MOTIVATION SUMMARY Graduate programs in Construction Management based on special subject of management are developed considering the needs of the industry and education in 1970's as a result of finding about the inadequacy of design oriented civil engineering education in dealing with complex projects. As a matter of fact, all developed countries have not long ago set up Construction Departments for construction management education considering the human and consequently financial and timely aspects of construction works involving multidisciplinary subjects. The latters can not be taught in the traditional graduate study of civil engineering. The aim of the education program in construction management is to train innovative and enterprising civil engineers who can also solve business problems. The productivity of human being is related with his motivation generally related with the level of satisfying his physical, emotional, intellectual needs. Therefore evaluation of motivation is a very important subject. Evaluation of motivation enables its control. In a control system there is a standard point that ensures control. Controls must be done in accordance with this standard point and change must be monitored. Motivation is derived from Latin word“Motus”(“Movere”) which means literally the force that causes“motion”. Therefore motivation is described as“ an individual's action by having its direction, force and priority as a result of the inner and outer motives”[2]. Motivation in education can be described as, directing the students to certain target by providing the necessary physical ( canteen, dining hall, classroom etc.) and the social conditions (trips, panels etc.)“Human mind, must first be logically convinced, and then emotionally satisfied. People with logical weakness work for you, if you only caress his emotions”[7]. According to Kazım Taşkent“motivations”means the action of man as a result of his (logical) conviction, whereas“manipulation”is the activity caused by his (influenced) emotion. xivThis work is based on Maslovv's hierarchy of needs ( Figüre 1 ) and reference is made to, X-Y and management net theories as far as they relate to the management science concepts..s Şelf N. Determination of change and the numerical level of motivation is important in education. The vvriter has developed a questionnaire form and a system of numerical analysis with 9 civil engineering students of last grade. The questionnaire including totally 63 questions classified in 4 sections is discussed with education and psychology experts before implementation. it has provided totally 62000 data on personal qualifications of students, on physical facilities of Civil Engineering Faculty and The Technical University of istanbul, on lectures and on future expectations (prospects) of students below explained : 1- Personal Ouestions : These questions are prepared in order to determine the personal profiles of the students. This part includes 10 questions and has a key role in discussing the outcome (results) of the research vvork. 2- Ouestions about the Educatİonal Institution : This part is prepared to evaluate the physical facilities of the institution and included 25 questions. XV3- Ouestions about The Lectures This part is prepared to evaluate the quality of the lectures and lecturers i.e., the educational quality. 4- Ouestions on Outlook of the Students : There are 10 questions in this part prepared in order to determine the future expectations (prospects) of the students and the contribution of the faculty in orienting the students. The student had to ansvver each question by noting different points. The first ones shovving the importance (the weight) of the subject for the student and the second his numerical evaluation (ansvver). The questionnaire is distributed and collected back outside the class hour of the students as proposed by our expert of psychology. No pre qualification is used selecting the samples who were the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and master degree students of the Civil Engineering Faculty at the Technical University of istanbul. The 1st grade students are considered to be partially unfamiliar with the university environment and are kept out of the questionnaire work. Identity (Name, school number...) is not asked in order to let them ansvver vvithout any fear and hesitation. The 3rd section presents, the numerical formulas used evaluating the level(s) of motivation as well as the computer output of the calculations in table form. in the 4st section, the validity of the mathematical approach and the difference betvveen the calculated results (motivation point) and student's evaluations (satisfaction f rom school) are discussed. in the same context the classification of data (dispersion according to categories) obtained from answers of students is presented. The sample chart is shown on figüre 2. (For details please look at 4th section, appendixes D and E) As a result, mathematical approach (model) vvhich enables the numerical evaluations of motivation is discussed in the related sections and is used for Civil Engineering students of The Technical University of istanbul. This has provided standard points for every category of the students in given classes. Section 4 proves that the data is acceptable. The data, vvhich indicate standard points for every category and calculated through the mathematical method is shown as follovvs. xviOQ I^M*>_ f%Sİjİ!!§£*İ&İİİ^^ ^!_ l!__ O“E 3 un ö q)^CT }..ü)O.sr l i lL- l l fft ^^â^SŞ^f-j;«ü ı2 sa ° «m rti S^S^^^^5- * uı o-->' p^g^sa q -jg.c ^rE.* ”° C *f>ı ^IIL^UJİ '2 *^ »Zl“ ro LU ^«gu = Cü® S*___S Q- üjoı ıO £.§r l-'...ı., l ıs g.4-1.2l *g '*jj &* > l11 l l l l l 1=1 loeıooıooıoouao ^”*rt«OOICMr-T- xvii2nd Class Standard point: 4.6193 3rd Class Standard point: 4.5897 4tn Class Standard point: 4.5445 Master Class Standard point: 4.5166 Ali Faculty Standard point: 4.5738 The merit of the presented vvork consists in especially using the views and the opinions of various expert (in education, sociology, psychology, mathematics) in this proj'ect management context.
