Özet
Bu çalışma The Magus ve Briefing for a Descent into Hell romanlarında dikey yönlü seyahatler aracılığıyla birlik düşüncesinin oluşumunu ve evrensel bağlantıları incelemektedir. Dikey yönlü seyahat dağ tırmanışı, uzaya çıkış ve yıldız gözlemi gibi yukarı yönlü; dağdan iniş ve yeraltına giriş gibi aşağı yönlü hareketler anlamına gelir. Diğer yandan savaşlar, deniz yolculukları ve sömürgeci seferler gibi yatay yönlü seyahatler ise benliği, gruplaşmaları, coğrafi bölünmeleri ve sınıf ayrılıklarını ön plana çıkarmaktadır. Ortalama bir insan dünya üzerinde kendi imkanlarıyla herhangi bir yere gidebildiği için kendini güçlü farzeder ve birey olarak hayatta kalabileceğini düşünür. Ancak dikeysellik konusu kişinin hem güçsüzlüğünü hem de makro alemdeki küçüklüğünü gösterdiği için benliğin önüne geçer. Göz önünde bulundurulması gereken bir diğer nokta da yukarı ve aşağının ruhsal çağrışımlarıdır. Dağ tırmanışı veya uzaya çıkış farketmeksizin, yukarı doğru seyahat eden kişi her şeyin kaynağı olan Tanrı'ya yolculuk ediyor sayılabilir zira yüksek yerler farklı zamanlarda ve bölgelerde Tanrı/ların evi olarak kabul görmüştür. Yeraltı da ölen kişilerin gömülmesi geleneğinden yola çıkılarak insanlık tarihinin bulunduğu yer olarak düşünülmüştür, böylece yeraltına inen kişi kendisini insanlık tarihinde bütünün bir parçası olarak bulur. Tezin birinci bölümü tarih boyunca çoğunlukla Batı medeniyetlerinin yataysallık ve dikeysellik algılarını incelemektedir. Savın tarihsel süreçte analizi siyasi olayların, toplumun değişen düşünce yapısının ve bilimsel gelişmelerin seyahat olgusunu nasıl şekillendirdiğini görmemize olanak sağlamaktadır. Ayrıca farklı dönemlere ait edebi eserlere atıfta bulunarak teorimizin geçerliliği sınanmaktadır. İkinci ve üçüncü bölümde ise The Magus ve Briefing for a Descent into Hell romanları incelenerek postmodern dönemde evrensel birlik fikrinin dikey yönlü seyahatler aracılığıyla öğretilip öğretilmediği araştırılmaktadır. Çalışma göstermektedir ki her ne kadar yadsınamaz toplumsal gerçeklikler nedeniyle romanların karakterleri başarısız olsa da yukarı ve aşağı seyahatler bu dönemde dahi öğreti araçlarıdır.

This study analyzes the creation of the idea of cosmic unity and universal connectedness through vertical journeys in The Magus and Briefing for a Descent into Hell. A vertical journey means movements upward like mountain climbing, spacefaring, and stargazing, and downward like descending a mountain and entering underground. On the other hand, horizontal journeys like wars, sea voyages, and colonial expeditions feature the self, faction, geographical division, and class distinction. Since an average person can move anywhere on their own on the Earth, they think they are mighty and can survive as an individual. However, as the issue of verticality shows people their weakness and smallness in the macro universe, it prevents the self. Another point to consider is the spiritual connotations of up and down. No matter if it is mountain climb or spaceflight, anyone moving upward can be thought to be journeying to God, the source of everything, as high terrains have been accepted as the home of God/s in different times and places. When it comes to underground, it has been regarded as the realm where the history of humanity lies due to the tradition of the burial of the dead; thus, one who descends into the underworld finds themselves as a part of the whole in the history of humanity. The first chapter of the study examines the sense of horizontality and verticality of mainly the Western civilizations throughout history. Analysis of the argument in the historical process enables us to see how political incidents, changing social discourse, and scientific developments have shaped the concept of journey. Furthermore, by referring to literary works of different eras, the validity of our thesis is tested. In the second and third chapters, whether the idea of cosmic unity is taught through vertical journeys in the postmodern period is explored by analyzing The Magus and Briefing for a Descent into Hell. The study shows that journeys upward and downward are means of teaching even in this period even though the characters of the novels fail because of undeniable social truths.
