ABSTRACT Small and medium scale firms always maintain their characters of being the foundation of economy. Because in such firm's structure and management are flexible therefore their adaptations toward environmental changes are rather easy and take a little time. For this reason, they invested on some areas that requires specialization that is frightening the big firms. However, small and medium scale firms with such advantages also face to Some disadvantages. Especially, during the period of development and growth, the financial and administrative problems come to picture as a serious crisis. Although such firms understand the strategic management as an unavoidable necessity, for the environmental challenges, they are still managed by their owner. And this case causes them to have vital problems. By the way, in order to cope with the fast and permanent environmental changes such firms have to give importance and emphasis on newly developed management methods. Briefly, the success of such firms is directly depended on the operation of strategic management. In this study, a survey is performed in Uşak deri Sanayi (Uşak Leather Industry) to understand the position and importance of strategic management in such small and medium scale firms.
