Özet
ÖZET (ABSTRACT IN TURKISH) 19. yüzyılda kadınlar birçok sosyal kısıtlamalara maruz kalmışlar ve onların içinde bulunduğu bastırılmış sosyal konum, dönemin romanlarında yansıtılmıştır. Bu dönemdeki pekçok yazar“kadın kimliği”ni eserlerinde başlıca tema olarak kullanmıştır. Bu eserler arasında Jane Austen' in yazdığı Pride and Prejudice ve George Eliot1 un yazdığı The Mill on the Floss' u sayabiliriz. Bu tezin amacı 19. yüzyılda kadın kimliğini yukarıda adı geçen iki romanda yansıtıldığı şekliyle incelemektir. Bu tez, bir giriş, üç esas ve bir de sonuç bölümünden oluşmaktadır. Giriş bölümünde 19. yüzyıl İngiltere'sinin sosyal durumu ve bunun kadınlar üzerindeki etkisi ele alınmaktadır. Toplumun katı bir“mükemmel kadın”tanımlaması vardı; bu tanımlama görünüşten başlayıp davranışları, sosyal rolleri ve kadınların tahammül etmeleri gereken sosyal kuralları da içine almaktaydı. Birinci bölümde sosyal durum, romanlardaki ortamla bağdaştırılarak incelenir ve kadınlar üzerindeki baskılar ele alınır. İkinci bölümde kadınların eğitimi üzerinde durulur; kadınlara, erkeklerle karşılaştırıldığında, son derece kısıtlı bir eğitim verilmekte ve bum eğitim onları süslemeyi ve 19. yüzyıl normlarına uygun hale getirmeyi amaçlamaktaydı. Dönemin düşüncesine göre, eğer bir kadın kendisine bir eş bulabilmeyi başarmışsa, o kadına verilen eğitim amacına ulaşmış demekti. Bu nedenle üçüncü bölümde“evlilik”konusu ele alınır, çünkü evlilik kadınlara tanınan hemen hemen tek meslekti ve bir eş ve anne olmak kadınların üstlenmesi gereken en önemli iki roldü. Bu çalışmadan çıkarılan sonuç, 19. yüzyıl İngiltere'sinde kadın olmak son derece kısıtlayıcı bir yaşam sürmek demekti. Bir çok kadının memnuniyetle kendilerine çizilen sınırlar içinde yaşamayı kabullenmelerine rağmen, bazı ilerici kadınlar bu kısıtlayıcı kurallara tepki göstermiş ve kendi bağımsız şahsiyetlerini ispat etmeyi seçmişlerdi.

IV ABSTRACT Women in the nineteenth century were subjected to many social restrictions and their repressed social position is reflected in the novels of the age. There is a large number of novelists who use“female identity”as a major theme in their novels. Among these works are Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and George Eliot's The Mill on the Floss. The aim of this thesis is to present the female identity in the nineteenth century as it appears in the two novels mentioned above. This thesis consists of an introduction, three main chapters, and a conclusion. In the introductory part the social background of nineteenth century England and its effects on women is given. At this priod, society had a strict definition of a“perfect lady,”starting with the physical appearance and extending to the manners and social roles, and the social rules women had to abide by. In the first chapter the social background is analyzed in relation to the settings of the novels and the restrictions on women are commented on. In the second chapter, the education of women is considered; women were being given a very limited education when compared with men and this education only aimed to make them decorative and fit into the nineteenth century norms of behaviour and etiquette.It was believed that if a woman succeeded in finding a husband, then her education had achieved its aim. Therefore, in the third chapter“marriage”is handled as the only career open to women; being a wife and mother were indeed the most important social roles for women. The conclusion drawn from this study is that being a woman in nineteenth century England meant one led a very restricted life. Although many willingly accepted to live within the limits set down for them, some, usually the more intelligent ones, chose to react and assert their own individuality.
