ABSTRACT The aim of the thesis is to examine Ernest Hemingway's life, Literary personality and the two important novels -“The Sun Also Rises”and“For Whom The Bell Tolls”- based on four outlines. 'Despair', 'Nihilism', 'Spiritual Barikrupcy' and 'Self Satisfaction'. The thesis consists of four chapters : the first chapter gives some information about Ernest Hemingway who is the one of the most famous novelists in 20 Th. Century - and his literary personality that helps us to understand his work clearly. The second chapter deals with“The Sun Also Rises”(1926) his first novel and the characters in this novel live in the war, after the war they effort to learn how to live in this world again. It is the profile of 1925 Europe and the people - is presented and analyzed based on four outlines. The third chapter deals with“For Whom The Bell Tolls”(1940) his most well-known novel. It is a guerrilla war in Spanish Civil war. Fascists are fighting against the Republicans. The hero, American volunteer helps the republicans. During the war bloody and painful scenes are seen. This chapter is presented and analyzed based on four outlines. Then, a brief summary of the whole thesis will be given in chapter four.
