Özet (Çeviri)
The purpose of this thesis which comprises a thorough examination of the characteristics conserning style, from and content upon the twenty-seven plays of Tennessee Williams is to research principally the basic features of the dramaturgy of Tennessee Williams by starting from the short plays which seem to be the first miniature examples of the playwright's full-length plays. In the very beginning of the first part in which the plays are examined from the perspective of content, the modern world seen by the playwright as in a social and moral regression, is presented; the ways of escape from reality performed by the fugitive characters who cannot adapt themselves to the modern world and who cannot establish a harmony between their inner lives and the present world, are given. In the following section, the characters in the plays are examined by way of classification, taking into account their psychological world, their social roles within the society and their location in the plays. In the last section, the human relations between the characters in the plays are evaluated in the light of Williams' ethical approach as well as in the light of basic themes such as“sex and violence”,“loneliness”and“non-being”. In the second part of the thesis in which the short plays are examined from the perspective of style and from, first, the formal characteristics of the plays are explored and also the genres used by the playwright are investigated; the patterns of space, the concept of time, the methods of personification and the dramatic action are examined. In the last section of the second part, the playwright's search for style and theatrical technics, mostly convenient to the essential material of this plays, has been evaluated. As a conclusion, it has been confirmed that Tennessee Williams' short plays carry within their structure certain autobiographical elements. It has been proved that in his short plays the playwright's approach towards the individual and the society from the point of view of social and moral values is basically realistic; it has been pointed out that the playwright's approach reflects his178 tendency to accept that the laws of nature are mostly dominant upon the character as well as the environment. Thus, as the playwright regards man as part of nature, his methods of research in his approach to human nature are basically naturalistic. It has been observed that while reflecting the realistic- naturalistic essence of his content, Williams, in his short plays, tends towards a style based on symbolism and poetical expression. In addition to this, the playwright attempts to create a kind of 'plastic theatre' which has the quality of being a theatre of research. In this connection, the short plays, from the perspective of character and environment, of themes used within the plays, of relations between major characters and of the dramatic action, are the first examples in miniature and in immature from of his full-length plays.
