The main aim of this research paper is to uncover ways for a Europe based legacy airline to improve its profitability throughout the so-called economic recessions. It is now a widely accepted opinion that airline industry is cyclical. The cycle repeats itself in around every ten years and comprises a few years of profits followed by a few years of losses due to periodicity of economic downturns. On the other hand, this cyclical nature conflicts with the increasing trend of air traffic. The Dissertation looks for answers to the reasons why airline industry's overall profitability remains marginal although the demand for airline services always seems to grow. The research starts with an introduction covering a literature review and a methodology. The second chapter then examines definitions and provides a brief introduction to economic concepts. Chapter 3 reviews the effects of recession on commercial aviation. After the main ideas have been introduced, the fourth and the fifth chapters try to discuss and summarize the key financial and operational processes in the airline industry. The sixth chapter sets out the performance analysis of Europe's top three legacy airlines, namely Air France-KLM, British Airways and Lufthansa covering the airlines' financial and operational performances in the pre-crisis and post-crisis era's between the years 2006 and 2013. The chapter then attempts to comment on the results obtained from the benchmarks. The final two chapters include conclusions and recommendations based on the research set out in the dissertation. Although every effort was made to use most up-to-date data in analyses and figures, one or more financial or traffic information may turn out to be“changed”or“incorrect”due to continuous adjustments or restatements made by the respective authorities or companies. Therefore, the author cannot be held responsible for any misunderstanding that may arise in relation to his academic work. However, he is firmly behind his data retrieval efforts.
