The 'March of the Ten Thousand' Greeks is regarded as one of the great military adventures of ancient history. Recruited by Kyros the Younger for a campaign against a troublesome Anatolian tribe, in summer 401 the Greek mercenaries found themselves marching towards Mesopotamia and the Persian heartland. North of Babylon they fought the king's army, and while they survived the battle intact, Kyros was killed. Followed closely by the Persians, the Greek force marched up along the Tigris into the mountains of Kurdistan, and after a horrendous winter in Armenia, they reached the Black Sea. An account of the journey was subsequently written by Xenophon the Athenian. His Anabasis Kyrou provides a detailed record of the march, and this, combined with his observations on the road, has enabled a chronology to be established. Traditionally, it has been assumed that Kyros began his expedition in March at Sardis, the capital of ancient Lydia; I argue in this dissertation that he did not begin until early summer, and that a more meaningful starting point would be Kelainai in Phrygia. To build this argument I have drawn on historical evidence, and a variety of chronological markers from the natural world, agriculture and the environment.
