This dissertation aims to describe the reason of Turkey's active Middle East policy since 2002 within the framework of the theoretical proposition of constructivist International Relations theory with special reference to the role of identity on foreign policy making. From the beginning of the establishment, Turkey has followed a Western.:.oriented foreign policy. The reason behind this policy was largely because of the Turkish state identity that was created as a result of the Kemalist reforms in the name of modernization. However, as the democratization and economic liberalization started to consolidate in Turkey, various sub-national identities, mainly Islamists, emerged in the political sphere and challenged the Kemalist-centric state identity with their own concept of identity. Therefore, Turkey has experienced a struggle between the Kemalists elites and the newly created Islamists elites. Turkey's re-orientation in terms of foreign policy was as a result of the tension between the two ideological gravitations. Recently, Turkey's active policy in the Middle East raised some questions whether Turkey's state identity is changing. In order to better understand the main determinants of Turkey's foreign policy preferences regarding Middle East, it is imperative to analyse Turkey's state identity.
