A series of experiments were conducted to examine whether or not bivalve (eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica), bay scallop (Argopecten irradians), and blue mussel (Mytilus edulis)) trochophores have potential use as live food for marine fish larvae. The sizes and the fatty acid compositions of trochophores were investigated. A short-term storage method has been developed to hold and transport live trochophores. The effects of storage on trochophore survival at 4-5 °C were ascertained. The mean size of M. edulis (73.50 ±5.24 mu) trochophores was significantly different (P^O.05) from C. virginica (50.96 ±4.38 mu.) and A. irradians (58.80 ±9.80 mu.). Significant differences were not recorded between sizes of C. virginica and A. irradians trochophores. Significant differences (P<;0.05) were detected in 20:5 («-3), 22:6 (f?-3), and total (co-3) HUFA levels of trochophores. A. irradians and M. edulis trochophores had significantly higher levels of total (w-3) HUFA than those of C. virginica. Significant differences were not detected between A. irradians and M. edulis trochophores for the levels of 20:5 (to-3), 22:6 (co-3) and total (co-3) HUFA. The storage technique used in this study arrests larval development of the bivalves at the trochophore stage for 5-7 days. There were no significant differences (P<0.05) in survival of the bivalve trochophores. During the storage, a reduction in the size of C. virginica and M. edulis trochophores was also observed. The study suggested that M. edulis trochophores would be the best diet for cold water marine fish larvae due to their size, high 20:5 (to-3), 22:6 (co-3), and total (co-3) highly unsaturated fatty acid compositions, their possible storage up to 6-7 days and theii capability to swim at low temperatures (4-5 °C). Whereas, A irradians trochophores would be the best diet for warmer water marine fish larvae due to their immobile characteristic at 4-5 °C, their high (co-3) fatty acid composition, size, and possible storage up to 7 days. Based on the immobility of C. virginica trochophores at cold temperatures (4-5 °C), their small size, and possible storage period up to 6 days, they could be considered as food source for warmer marine fish larvae. However, their low levels of 20:5 (co-3), 22:6 (u-3), and total (co-3) HUFA levels should be kept in mind.
