A novel intramolecular free radical cycloaddition onto substituted furans has been investigated. Cyclisation reactions were mediated with tri-n-butyltin hydride and tris-trimethylsilylsilane. Chapter I contains an introduction to radical chemistry and more especially radical cyclisation in organic synthesis.Chapter II is chiral induction studies on the radical precursor. Several chiral catalysis including; Oxazaborolidine, TADDOL and (-)-DAIB, were used to investigate enantioselectivity of the precursor and whether there was an influence on yield by optical induction.Chapter III details intramolecular free radical cycloaddition, fragmentation and electrocyclisaton cascade sequences. This methodology could afford to concise synthesis of hydroindanes.Chapter IV includes discussion on radical Diels-Alder reactions, which take place as long as a heteroatom linker is in the chain. We assume that the reaction preferably undergoes Diels-Alder pathway to provide bicyclic compounds rather than fragmentation towards the enone.Chapter V contains further investigations on substituted furans; free radical macrocyclisation was attempted leading a ten membered ring. Alternatively, palladium, which is usually used as an alternative of tri-n-butyltin hydride, was studied for Heck reaction. The last studied project was about the six membered cycloaddition / fragmentation reaction. This chapter also includes some achievable future projects towards general skeleton of prostagladins, pseudopterosins and the steroids.
