Özet (Çeviri)
In the translation of literary texts, the image is transferred to the target culture and change is a compulsory factor in this process. Umberto Eco's novel II Nome della Rosa is a literary work which abounds in imagery and many stylistic properties. It is also the applied form of Eco's theories on the“Open Text”and“Model Reader”and it stands to reason to say that any translation of this novel will undergo some changes while the encoding process in the target language occurs. It is the purpose of this study to determine whether the Turkish and English translations of the novel have successfully conveyed the stylistic properties of the source text while creating an acceptable text for the target language. In the first chapter Eco's theories on author-reader relationships and the model reader are analyzed so as to filrnish proper insight into Eco's“Open Work”and how he forms his model reader. The theoretical framework shows that Eco has woven some subtle strategies into his work to entice and create the model reader, it is therefore essential that these strategies be preserved for the same“model reader”to be created by the two translators. In the second chapter the stylistic features of J1 Nome della Rosa are discussed, important aspects of the“passage”to be analyzed are underlined and the cultural divergences of the translations into Turkish and English are stressed. The Turkish text is lingually and culturally different, hence the task of translating is accordingly more difficult, the English text shares a quantity of common features with the Italian text. such as the same religious and cultural background and similar syntax. The third chapter comprises a descriptive study of the two target texts with respect to Eco's intertextual strategies. It results from this study that the English target text '1as tried to preserve the strategies of the author and has also created an acceptable target text. In the Turkish target text some alterations in the strategy of the author are visible in order to create an“acceptable”text in the target language. This results in the change of addressee and the target text no longer creates the“model reader”of the author. These changes of intertextual strategies are indicative of the cultural and lingual constraints of the translator. The study terminates with the evaluation of data gathered from the descriptive studies and it detcrmincs the degree to which hoth translators have rendered the“model reader”of Eco.
