ABSTRACT This study was done to analyse affects of salt on chickpeas germination, plant growth and the symbiosis by comparing the NaCl tolerance of chickpea specific strains of Rhizobium with tolerance of chickpea plant grown either with combined N or dependent on symbiotic N fixation. Increasing salt concentration significantly reduced the percentage germination after 75 mM. Fresh and dry weight, root and shoot length, vigor index, dry weight stress index, hight stress index were reduced after 50 mM NaCl, According the germination experiment ILC-482 and ILC-195 were superior then the FLIP 84-19C and FLIP 85-14C to salinity. Two chickpea cult i var, ILC-482 and ILC-195 then grown in different soil salinity either inoculated with Rh.429, Rh.620 and Rh.1002 or nitrogen given, and the effect of salinity on modulation and symbiotic system was investigated. Salinity significantly decreased shoot and root development, nodul at i on and nitrogen content of biomass. Rhizobium strains formed an infective and effective symbiosis with both cultivar under nonsaline and 1% soil salinity. The roots were more sensitive to salinity than the shoots and mineral nitrogen decreased the sensitivity of plants.
