ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to present the reader with the necessary knowledge to integrate literary texts in language learning process particularly on the lower and ı the upper intermediate classes of language proficiency in Turkish Anatolian High Schools. The first chapter is prepared for introductory purposes. it has presentation, problem, purpose, and scope of the study. The second chapter defines a work of art the properties of a work of art, and the distinction between everyday language and scientific language. The second chapter also deals with stylistics briefly. The third chapter explains why, what and how to teach literary texts. The fourth chapter gives a number of technigues and apparatus in teaching literary texts and defines the structure of a short story and explains the activities which can be carried out in the teaching of a short story. e The fifth chapter is a case study in which I illustrate the teaching of Indian Camp by Earnest Hemingway by using some of the technigues and activities explaine,d in the previous chapters. At the end there is a conclusion in which a brief summary of my thesis is given. -i-
